Reading threads for which you are NOT the intended audience

So, which threads or types of posts do you find yourself consistently reading for no discernable reason?

For me, it’s any of the geeky guitar-related threads in Cafe Society. I have never, and almost certainly will never, played guitar. I don’t know anyone who does play guitar with any level of competency. I listen to a lot of guitar-driven music, and I have a few favorite players, but only rarely do I think, “how did he do that,” or, “I wonder what type of guitar he’s playing.” But for some inexplicable reason I find myself endlessly fascinated by discussions of humbuckers (I’m still not entirely sure what one is), guitar finishes, chord fingerings, etc.

The only explanation I can come up with is that I could find myself being a real guitar nerd if I played. Like I said, I don’t, but if I did I think I would be one of those guys. I scratch the hobby-nerd itch with SCUBA diving, which has the same split between technique/philosophical discussions and hardware conversations. I think I recognize kindred spirits in the guitar world.

So, what threads and posts do you consistently follow, in which you would have absolutely nothing to contribute, and you’re not even sure why you read them in the first place?

Guys’ questions for guys. I guess I’m still trying to figure out the opposite gender.

Opposite for me. Girls have their hymens surgically opened? I never had any idea.

I’m Dutch but I follow all the Elections threads,

someone said its like Horserace, well thats how I follow it

Computer stuff, like technical questions and interaction modes. Which I don’t understand. And the answers which I also don’t understand. I tend to be very impressed with the unintelligible discussions though. Perhaps because I’m almost functionally computer illiterate. It’s like a tribe from New Guinea that just got discovered.

American politics, threads for guys.

I thought the whole point of this board was to fight ignorance. I need to read the threads on subjects I don’t know anything about more than the ones where I do.

I subscribe to all aviation-related threads. Questions for/from pilots, stuff on air disasters, etc. I have absolutely nothing to contribute, having never even been in the cockpit of an airplane. But I find it endlessly fascinating.

I have no idea. I know that sometimes I will be amused at myself for looking at a particular thread and other times I sincerely wish I could turn back time and avoid going into one or another thread. But since I’m a slave to the shiny, I’ll mouse-over the title and if something looks like it might be interesting, for whatever reason, I’ll check it out. Sometimes you stumble across a few gems. Other times, not so much.

Threads dealing with parenting. I do not have kids, and I have no intention of getting any. I can’t stand the little buggers.

Still, I’m apparently attracted to parenting related threads like a moth to a flame, and all too frequently feel a pressing urge to chip in with my uninformed and profoundly useless opinions.

Is this a sign that my biological clock is ticking? Hang on, do men even have a biological clock?

Any thread that touches on female physiology or the female experience. I already know what it’s like to be a guy, and I’m intensely curious to understand what the other half of the people on this planet go through - socially, physiologically, etc.

I like reading the relationship-problem threads. Bad boyfriends, crazy girlfriends. I’m always ready to add my irrelevant, out of it, and useless two cents (as if I’ve had it any better!). Mating and dating is sometimes an ugly game, glad I don’t have to go through the hoops again.

I also, now that I’ve read everybody else’s responses, really read all the airplane stuff too, and I just can’t pull myself away from the relationship trainwrecks.

Boobies.

I like to read threads about bras. Its not really an erotic thing, more curiosity. I shamefully admit to loving the thread about how women put their bras on. Seemed that most of the ladies thought their way was the only way! there were about 3 or 4 different methods, and variations on those methods. Fascinating!

Guys and medical mysteries. Pretty much the same thing, when you think about it. I read them because they are complicated and fascinating subjects.

Two specific threads that I love are the ongoing poker game and the race to the bottom of the NFL. I don’t play, watch, or even understand poker or football, but those threads are funny and entertaining even when you don’t know what they’re talking about.

Vagina. It’s odd – I think a recent-ish thread about “rooting around” in the accordian folds of a birth canal might have turned me the other way. Seriously, I heard all that before, but not all at once.

For realer, I always read threads about boobs and stuff.

This. I don’t have kids, don’t want kids, have never wanted kids. I’m fascinated by these threads and try really hard not to put in my useless $.02.

I’m fascinated by parenting/children threads as well (I don’t have kids either), although I don’t share your dislike of kids. In fact, I actually rather enjoy kids (although not in a creepy way  ).
