I think if you go into the porn industry, you shouldn’t have to buy your own drinks.
Even the guys?
Imagine the OP’s angst if he realizes that it wasn’t all that long ago that you could be drafted at 18, then sent to Vietnam, but you couldn’t vote. But on a high note, you could drink in Vietnam at 18.
And it wasn’t even really his initiative. It was Senator Frank Lautenberg’s, who introduced the legislated tie-in between drinking age laws and highway funding, inspired by intense lobbying pressure from MADD and by his annoyance that NJ college kids were crossing the NY state line to get their drink on, then wrecking on the way back.
(Couldn’t they have gone for the intensified *enforcement *effort (checkpoints, lower BAC limits, harsher penalties) alone and achieved their goals? We may never know)
Not all of the territories! Here in PUR, where Og knows we need the money, we figured we could take a few more potholes and wobbly bridges just so the 18-20 group can focus their college years on drinking like the good Lord intended…
But yes, a few of the states held out with the beer and wine limits for a few years, however by the turn of the century all the States+DC had lined up to 21 across the board; and only a minority specifically forbid any under-21 consumption even at home.
Not the death squads, or the funding of terrorists, or the shifting the tax burden from the rich to the poor, but the drinking age? Who gives a shit about the drinking age after they are 21? As for Congress being filled with useless, grandstanding morons, there is nothing new with that.
I give this pitting a negative 3. And I think Reagan was an awful human being and an awful President.
A lot of us do. Based on principle and policy.
Puerto Rico has a drinking age of 18, last I checked.
The estimates are that by 2030 we will have self driving cars anyway, so I’m hoping that finally puts an end to the “OMG 18 year olds driving drunk!!!” business anyway.
I agree, but if I was going to yell at Reagan for anything, my first choice would be his horrible Central America policies. And the ‘evil empire’ business in general. Though the drinking thing would be somewhere on the list as well.
I’m anti-porn, so I don’t really care about whether 18 year olds are allowed to act in porn or not. But I do have a problem with the way some people are increasingly trying to infantilize young adults, and I suspect pretty soon we are going to see people arguing in favour of raising the military age, voting age, marriage/sexual cosnent age, age at which we expect people to be adults, etc…
For what it’s worth, in many Latin American countries you can vote at 16.
Well, I wasn’t crazy about Reagan for a variety of reasons. If Obama did the same thing now, they’d be screaming for his head, and the Tea Party would try to introduce mandatory beer breaks in the day care centers.
I do dislike the way the legal system has broken up the traditional rites of passage to adulthood. Way I see it, legally speaking, one is either an adult or one is not. I do not care for the idea that a 19 year old can vote, is responsible for registering for Selective Service, and is considered a legal adult in all respects… but can’t legally drink an alcoholic beverage. I think that was a bum move, and I don’t like it simply because it draws out the process of maturation.
When I was in college, I’d hear people in the hallways, “Oh, man, I got SO drunk last night, and my date blew chunks all over the park!” I’d look, and the speaker would be 18, 19, and I would think, “Well, this may be irresponsible, but it is part of the learning process. Hope they didn’t drive.”
Years later, when I went back to get my certifications, I’d hear people in the hallways, “Oh, man, I got SO drunk last night, and my date blew chunks all over the park!” I’d look, and the speaker would be 21, 22, and I would think, “Jeez, man, aren’t you a little old for this? Aren’t you supposed to have gotten this out of your system by now?”
Well, they can’t. Not legally. So instead of screwing up when they’re young, now they can screw up in ways that more easily impact the rest of their lives…
Pssssttttttt…Chunks was the quarterback. He got all the women
…but the person talking in the elevator was a WOMAN…
The hilarity is that you played the exact dumbass, simpleton card appleciders was referring to.
But we get it, you really care about the children. Law be damned.
Fetal alcohol syndrome is such a terrible thing. Life must be so hard for you Stringbean.
Worse, the way I heard it, Chunks was the dog!
Yes, I support fetal alcohol syndrome as I do Gaddafi. Your rhetorical strategem lacks parallel.
I look forward to the day when politicians quit playing the “we’re doing it for the CHILDREN!” card.
Because when I hear a politician or social crusader swear they’re doing it for the children, I nowadays instantly interpret it to mean, “Pay no attention to the ulterior motive behind the curtain…”
Are you really that intolerant? Clearly she was bisexual.
Don’t you know that assuming otherwise makes you a bigot and more evil than Reagan?

Whatever other good arguments there might be to lower the drinking age, this is not one that impresses me at all.
