'Real' Ghosts As Proof of an Afterlife...

This is great debates - where opinions should be backed up by facts or atleast well argued - as it stands, you just decleared that if a person doesn’t believe in ghosts, then that person does not exist - which, is, well - stupid.

You aren’t stating an opinion on the subject though-you’re just saying everybody is right. It is basically a null statement that does nothing to further the conversation on either side of the equation.
BTW, the name of this particular forum is “Great Debates”- where you back up your opinion with evidence to the best of your ability.

everyone has their own beliefs …

so just bush them for not believing in the same thing, as you do

So, just for the record-what are your beliefs when it comes to the topic of this thread?

Sure, but this isn’t an opinion matter. Either ghosts exist or they don’t. So some of those beliefs are wrong, and the whole point of fighting ignorance is to determine which ones are.

does that apply to Santa Clause? Zombies? Unicorns? Aliens? ‘Thing I just made up in my head that goes bing when angry’?

Do you even have any personal opinions on the matter…or is the problem that, according to your own philosophy, you have to automatically state your personal opinions don’t matter?

Going back to the OP, I question the notion that a certified spectral phenomenon is real proof of an afterlife. After all, even if you grab your PKE meter and confirm the existence of a free-roaming, vaporous, full-torso apparition, you still haven’t answered the question of where it actually came from, and what it actually is. It could be a dead person come back to loiter and act nonsensically, yes, but it could also just be a weird 3-d recording of past events, recorded by/on the region it’s being seen in and playing back periodically. It could be a demon. It could be a confused god, or just an extradimensional entity which had been worshipped as a god by the Hittites, Mesopotamians, and the Sumerians. Or maybe it’s just an alien with a hologram projector screwing with us for the fun of it. Any of these options are as likely if-not more likely than the idea that our clearly physical bodies spawn an invisible spirit clone, and 1/1000000 of them decide to hang about the place.

If it can be seen, it can be ‘detected’. Humans see things via light being reflected (or generated) from the object in question, and passing via the eyes into chemical receptors. These ‘human’ receptors can be duplicated (and significantly improved upon) using modern technology.

I something is real, it can be detected. Nothing that interacts with us exists ‘outside science’. Science is a process for examining physical evidence to understand what is happening in our universe.

It may be that things like ghosts (assuming the experiences people have are real) only generate electrical energy that causes hallucinations in the human brain, fooling those people into thinking they are experiencing an actual phenomenon. If so, eventually we will be able to detect and study what causes those hallucinations.

Really?

So when I take acid and see flying elephants, that occurs via light being reflected from a flying elephant, and passing via my eyes into chemical receptors?

And when I enter a cinema see Mickey Mouse chasing Goofy, that occurs via light being reflected from a giant talking mouse and an anthropomorphic dog, and passing via my eyes into chemical receptors?

The one thing that modern science is quite sure of is that seeing is a hell of a lot more than light being reflected from an object and passing via the eyes into chemical receptors. The vast majority of what we see is generated in our brains, not our eyes. This is why we can see thing like flying elephants and talking mice, and we can even get consensus on what we saw the talking mouse doing.

So the entire universe outside our hubble volume is not real, since, by definition, it can’t be detected? Congratualtions, you just said that >99% of the universe is not real.

And try telling your wife that your love for her isn’t real. After all, it can’t be detected.

And then try stealing some banknotes, and arguing to the judge that they don’t have any real value, because that also can’t be detected. I bet you still get convicted of larceny for stealing property of value greater than $500.

There are far more real things in this universe that cant be detected than can not.

Nonsense. No scientist or philosopher would ever endorse such a position. Science is only capable of evaluating a subjective reality based upon consistent rules. Anything that falls outside of that definition falls outside science. That includes, amongst other things, emotions and evaluations of worth, which are things that we indisputably do interact with every day.

Can you show me the scientific evidence for this absolutist claim?
You must have scientific evidence, right? Because if you don’t then the claim isn’t real, by your own argument.

How are ghosts able to pass through just about any physical obstacle, yet remain on earth’s surface, and move with the earth’s revolution, orbit around the sun, movement through the galaxy, and the galaxies movement through the universe?

That said, there has be no empirical, substantiated evidence for ghosts. Ever. Most likely because when they died, their ghost passed right through the earth, and careened through the Milky Way as gravity and matter had no sway on them any longer.

Stupid Ghosts.
