Dr. Oz show claims checked by researches, fail miserably. I don’t think anyone here is too surprised by these results, but it’s nice to see more results that confirm just what an enormous quack he is.
He hasn’t been having a good few weeks, has he? First the Twitter fiasco, and now this. With any luck, the whole “celebrity doctor” fad is starting to die out. Ah, who am I kidding . . .
ETA: Oh, I almost forgot the Senate hearing on those weight loss pills or whatever he was selling. I wonder what’s caused the sudden fury.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain…
But… but… isn’t he Oprah’s darling?? How can this be???
There is a book to be written here. The guy is a legitimate doctor - a freakin’ heart surgeon. This isn’t some “Medical Education from Borneo College” situation, where he got in through the side door. I know a physician that has worked with him at Columbia, and when Oz is actually acting as a doctor, he is apparently very good at what he does.
So - WTF?! I have read the New Yorker profile, followed the various stories. I just don’t get it. I mean, I suppose I get it (?) - trading integrity for fame, fortune and adulation. But he is getting hammered from many, many directions - what could possibly keep him moving in this direction…?
I have a feeling that a lot of highly-skilled surgeons are exactly like The Todd from Scrubs. So laser-focused on one skill that their brain doesn’t have room for anything else, like a working knowledge of internal medicine or the basic precepts of the scientific method.
His mind is so open his brain fell out.
Or he’s an evil snake oil peddler who knows damn well that he’s overstating the claims he’s making and doesn’t give a shit as long as he has new content to fluff his show with every episode.
I really haven’t figured out which. Or which is worse.
I think you’re right - I’m always curious about what makes Dr. Oz do the things he does. In addition to his other woo, he is also basically an anti-vaxxer (he doesn’t come right out and say not to vaccinate, but he is on record saying he won’t vaccinate his own kids). I don’t know how you get from good surgeon to whatever the hell he is now. The cynic in me says that he sold his integrity for a large paycheque and a popular tv show, but can the answer really be that simple?
(bolding added)
I suspect this is it really. An hour a day on medical stuff? How is he going to fill that time without putting his viewers to sleep? There’s already The Doctors (which I don’t watch either but the bits I have seen don’t seem to be particularly saturated in Woo), how much new can he bring every day?
Lucky Dr Phil, he can just have another version of a “people are trainwrecks” show with the added fun of being able to shake his finger at nearly everyone.
Working in a hospital, it’s distressing the number of perople who think their PhD in (narrow field) makes them an expert of everything.
I think the problem is more basic.
1)Dr Oz is married to a woman who is a Reiki practitioner and believes in woo.
2)Dr. Oz has a Y chromosome.
3)Profit?
