Really annoying spam problem. What should I do?

I have a Nextel cell phone that has text messaging. Each text message costs me 15 cents. I keep getting text messages from someone I don’t know offering me low interest rates on loans for college. They gave a cellular phone number (a 206 area code is usually a nextel phone). The title of the text message is just a bunch of letters and they use a lot of periods throughout the message, even putting them between letters in words. They gave a website address however I think it’s phony. It’s very annoying because I’ve gotten eight of them in one day and it’s costing me money!

I’ve had this problem before. Nextel seems to want to fix the problem each time by giving me a new phone number. These phone numbers are always ones that have been used by previous customers and I always end up getting calls from people I don’t know.

I plan on seeing if Nextel will disable all text messaging but I hate doing that because it’s very useful (and much more private). I’m really at a loss as to how they got my number if they didn’t already have it when the previous nextel customer had my number. I have family members that don’t even know my number. Four people know my number. My parents and my two coworkers and I know for a fact they didn’t give it out.

I’m looking on opinions for what else I should do. I kind of want to confront whoever is doing this. Is it worth going to my local Sheriff’s dept. or will they be unable to help? I know a couple people there who at the very least will try and help me find who owns that telephone number.

You’d probably do better by getting hold of your state attorney general or the FCC. At least check their websites.

By the way, 206 is the area code for the Seattle area (used to be all of Western Washington), My Dad just switched cell phone services again and still has 206.
