I always thought Heaven Knows from Robert Plant was a rather pretty song. I forget the name of the album…
Well, trust me to offer a couple of bluegrass entries. Try:
You Are My Flower, as performed by Flatt and Scruggs (it’s an old Carter Family tune).
Wildwood Flower as performed by Emmylou Harris.
There Is a Time as performed by The Dillards. (That one makes me cry, Paw.)

Far too many for me to try listing them all, but the most recent really beautiful song that I heard was the song playing during the end credits of Spirited Away. I don’t know the song’s title (I’m assuming it’s something in Japanese), so I’ll probably have to wait until I see the movie again to find out.
California Stars - written by Woody Guthrie and performed by Wilco and Billy Bragg
Takes My Breath Away, by Tuck & Patti
How about Here Comes the Sun?
I don’t hear it much on the radio around here anymore, but the INXS song “Beautiful Girl” really has that effect described in the OP, for me at least.
Dust In The Wind: Kansas
The Boys Of Summer: Don Henley

Wendall Wagner: Curse you!! You beat me by 12 hours with Eva Cassidy shakes fist in non-threatening manner

WSLer,
So revive my thread called “The Eva Cassidy appreciation thread” and we can all talk about her.
“Clocks,” by Coldplay. Gives me shivers.
If you haven’t heard it, and most people apparently haven’t, find the song Joan Jett of Arc by Clem Snide. Breathtakingly gorgeous, both musically and lyrically.
You might also want to follow up with The Dairy Queen and Your Favorite Music.
“Nightswimming” by R.E.M. Between the piano and the lyrics, this song is just…wow.
And recently, “One Down” by Ben Folds. I heard it for the first time on his live CD, and it equally kicked my ass.
I find Tori Amos’ singing in general to be beautiful. However “Playboy Mommy” and “Purple People” are especially captivating songs of hers.
That was gonna be my vote.
Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks
