Really Beautiful Songs

“Remember the Mountain Bed” from the Mermaid Avenue II disc by Wilco/Billy Bragg

The Streets: It’s too late.

So sad wonderful and beautiful.

I can’t hear this without singing, “You’ve got a booger on your finger/ do you have to let it linger?”

But yes, a lovely song.

I’ll have to nominate the Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??”

So much by Neil Finn it’s hard to pick. Maybe “Into Temptation” (technically by Crowded House).

What a timely thread- I’ll confine my choices to one per person/group, how about 3 mainstream and 3 obscure picks?

I’ll have to go with WSLer and King Friday with a vote for Kansas, but instead I’ll go with “Carry on My Wayward Son.”

I also have to back up EllenCherry with an REM pick- the song “Belong” is absolutely wrenching, I love it!

And lastly, we need a little U2 presence in this thread, how about “Mysterious Ways,” who can resist

For my little known picks, I’d like to first recognize Carbon Leaf, an amazing band out of Richmond (they won an AMA recently, you may have heard of them?) “Desperation Song” gets me into a revolutionary spirit everytime AND shows off the band’s utter fabulousness!!

I also adore Dar William’s song “When I was a Boy” It’s perfect in every way, end of story.

Lastly, the band Cowboy Mouth has an (I think) unreleased track called “Irene Wild” and I sob uncontrollably every time. It’s a simple love song, acoustic and short- it’s the perfect unrequited love and what comes after song, I highly recommend swiping it off the net!! (I would include a link if I had any idea where I got it…)

Alright, well, that’s about enough of that- keep posting I love finding new sources for music

Good call!

Elton John’s ** The Greatest Discovery ** & ** First Episode at Heington **, both from his Elton John album.

The songs still are sung.
It was fun to be young.
But please, don’t be sad wherever you are.

There Will Come a Day-Faith Hill
I’ll Be Around-Joan Osborne
Haunt Me-Sade
Any Kind of Light-Margaret Becker
Let It Be-the Beatles
(sorry about this one, but) What The World Needs Now is Love-Jackie DeShannon
Most anything by Gypsy Soul, but in particular Talk to Me

[sub]Geeez, there’s a s#!tload I’m leaving out…[/sub]

Sounds of Silence Simon and Garfunkel

Blackbird Beatles

At Seventeen Janis Ian

These Are The Days Van Morrison

I agree with this all the way up to the point where that muted trumpet starts playing. It’s just to “lounge act-ish” for me. But the rest of the song is excellent.

“China” by Tori Amos
“We’re Going to be Friends” by the White Stripes
“Nightswimming” REM
“Pink Moon” Nick Drake

From Mulholland Drive
Rebekah del Rio - Llorando
(Cover of Roy Orbison’s Crying in Spanish)

The closing of Heaven and Hell Part I by Vangelis. This was used as the theme for Cosmos, and therefore has been with me most of my life.

The Waterboy’s “cover” of the Yeats poem. Their version is called “Human Child,” I think.

Anything by Dead Can Dance. Especially “Yulunga.”

“Albatross” by Judy Collins. So atmospheric, and the lyrics have a rather E.A. Poe quality about them. It sounds very good next to Robert Plant’s “Ship of Fools.”

Greensleeves. Any version. Especially the one from the first Natural Wonders Xmas album.

That ought to be enough for now…

“Everybody Knows” by Concrete Blonde or Nick Drake and The Bad Seeds. Both excellent renditions but Nick’s edges out with a truly haunting voice.

“Maybe” by The Ink Spots. Guaranteed to give you goosebumps. Its what I like to call “Pure singing”. Most notably used with PERFECT tounge in cheek fun in the Intro of the greatest RPG ever, Fallout.

“Allentown” by Billy Joel. Though its a sad song, anyone who lived in Allentown, PA will appreciate the homage. I just truly love the song.

DaddyTimesTwo Heaven Knows is on the Now and Zen album.

“Bridge over Troubled Water” (S&G) would be my pick.

Bad by U2

“Be My Baby”, sung by Ronnie Specter and the Ronnettes.

“The Price You Pay” by Bruce Springsteen
“Stars” on the US cast recording of Les Miserables
“All I Want is You” by U2
Ditto “Nightswimming”, “Dust in the Wind” and “Allentown”

I won’t list the hymns I love as they don’t fit the OP: I have to sing along with them!

Naturally I forgot my all-time favorite:

“Lies” by Stan Rogers. Gets me crying every time.

You’re Pussy’s Glued to a Building on Fire - John Frusciante

The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
