Really bored by your anger and hatred

I can not spell or do grammar. Despite having gone to very prestigious schools. It frustrates me, but I was never taught how to do grammar, and my spelling lacks because of the unique way in which I learned the english language. Having not had a lot of interaction with other people before I reached the age of around 12, I learned entirely through reading. I read far above my age level, my favorite author in the 6th grade was Tom Clancy.

I am very intelligent, having not only a high IQ, but I am also able to pick up on things much quicklier than others and solve puzzles much easier than most people.

It frustrates me, as my grade school never taught me grammar. It was a horrible place, but because of all the books I had read, I managed to pass the test and get into my private high school with a high standing. In high school, they assumed that I had already learned everything in grade school. And I carefully selected my words and phrases in essays done in class so I would not be graded down for my horrible grasp of grammar and spelling. ::sigh::

I would very much like to learn grammar, but I don’t know where to begin. I can not afford to hire a tutor. I’ve been asking my friends to correct anything errant in my speech, but it’s only been a slight improvement.

And, another problem which prevents me, is my strange brain structure. I think very differently from most people, and when writing or speaking, I’ve noticed that I’ve changed directions of the sentance midway through. An example of this would be “I am book is read.” Where I managed to combine “I am reading this book” with "

::foolishly hit the post button::

I read this book"

well, this has gone on too long. It’s very frustrating for me.

edit - I tried editing my previous post, and it said I did not have permission. ??

In case you haven’t been able to find out yet, ava – only moderators and administrators can edit posts on this message board. The FAQ is a bit vague on this, as far as a new poster is concerned, but that is th’ way things are around here.

Aside from the fact that this is a post by a known troll, and since Lynn has been so forthright by leaving this thread open, I’d love to see some intelligent responses to the questions posed. I don’t post much, but I have been lurking a bit lately, and some of the points made are interesting. Since this thread remains open, let’s address the questions in an adult manner.

Bandanaman, I hope you’re kidding.

Anything preventing you from starting the process?

No, I’m not. If this thread is open, then why not address the questions? What’s the harm? It might be interesting. Otherwise, it’s a runaway, and might as well be closed.

What makes you think I DIDN’T?!

[sub]Sometimes it’s good to be serious. Sometimes you just treat life like the joke it is.[/sub]

Actually, I’m interested in the way that some people are just naturally good spellers while others, despite a decent education and access to literature remain functionally illiterate.

This has happened within my own family, where my 18 year old son who is a voracious reader cannot spell/construct a sentence to save his life, while my youngest who would rather walk on hot coals than pick up a book is superbly literate. All my kids were read to and encouraged to read from the time they could hold a book in their chubby little paws, yet this seems to have little to do with the acquisiton of written language skills. And despite my every effort to help the older one with his writing, he remains unable to ‘get it’. (Oh, and he’s not dyslexic btw).

Funnily enough, I was probably LESS attentive to the reading needs of my youngest kid, who seemed to pick up these skills almost magically. I certainly didn’t ‘teach’ him to read as I attempted to do with the older three…after that many kids there is just not the time to spare mostly.

So I guess my point is that, from my experience, the ability to spell well and apply grammatical rules to writing seems to be innate. Many people, despite attentive parents and a good education lack these skills, and no amount of remedial intervention seems to fix the problem.

And if you haven’t got it by 8, you’re probably not GOING to get it.

**Where is all your anger and hatred coming from? **
I have my suspicions that it might be Neptune, but logic tells me it’s from interacting with my environment. I rarely get pissed off when I’m asleep.

Are these minor issues really bothering you so much?
It depends on the issue. Like on TH a woman asked to cut in front of me, pleading she was just getting cigarettes. I said sure, though she got in front of me before the words were out of my mouth. Then she told the cashier she needed to pay for the cartons separately. And she wanted to pay with rolls of quarters, which confused the cashier since it was her first day. And, after the poor confused cashier got the ok on using rolls of quarters, the woman demanded she rebag the cigarettes since they were going to two different people. The woman must have known she was going to be a pain in the ass, so why did she ask me to wait through all that?? But I’ll probably have forgotten this all by Monday. It’s not like I followed her to the parking lot and beat her up, or anything.

What are you doing to make things better?
Better about what, my anger? Or a more nebulous “I need to make the world a better place” sort of thing? Actually, at the moment I’m just concentrating on not making the world any worse than it is, and I avoid people when I’m in a bad mood. Happy?

Do even want things to get better, or do you prefer to insult others so that your limited worldview remains undisturbed?
I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. Some things, and people, are deserving of scorn, and may be shamed into changing their ways.
Do you know that you are interacting with other human beings, each of whom is being the best that they can be at this moment in time?
I’m not being “the best I can be” at the moment, so I think it’s fair to say that there are a lot of people having an off day as well.

Is it possible that right now someone is ranting to someone else about something you did?
I don’t see why not. I probably annoy people too.

Would the discussion be more fruitful if they could discuss the situation reasonably with you?
Probably not. Do you suppose I should have attempted a reasonable discussion with the cigarette woman, and wasted more time?

**Would you be happier if the world became a better place? **
This is a trick question, right?

Would it be a good thing if you were involved in that process?
Funny thing, despite a flare for sarcasm, I’ve spent my adult life trying to do just that. I work with kids of various needs, and if I get the position I’m interviewing for on Monday, I’ll be able to take up the good fight again. It sort of gives me the warm fuzzies thinking about helping kids. On the other hand, thinking about certain actors has a similar effect…:stuck_out_tongue:

Deep down, you have good intentions, but will blasting someone really make your life better and more fulfilling?
Yes.
**Do any of you have children? **
Nope. Put me in the camp of " I love kids, as long as they don’t go home with me."

Is this the way that you would like them to deal with you?
Thinking about imaginary people I don’t intend to write about is not good for my mental health.

Are some of you children, stuck in an adult body?
If you take the comma out, this question is funnier.

**Many of you are fairly well-educated, academically. Why did you go to school? **
It seemed like a good idea at the time. It certainly wasn’t to prepare myself for a lucrative career, so I’ve learned.

To achieve a sense of smarmy cockiness?
Nah, I had that down way before college.

Is that the main thing they taught you?
The main thing they taught me was that despite the horror stories to the contrary, you can get by putting things off to the last minute. That, and every class I skipped cost the equilient of a J Crew sweater.
It’s amazing how uneducated some of you are in areas of human interaction. If you say that you’re not this much of an ass in real life, then why do you choose to be an ass here?
I’ve never had a pit thread of my own, so I guess I’m not as much of an ass as I could be, if I really worked at it.

Fight! Fight! Yeah, if someone is really threatening you. But because someone said something that was wrong? Because they made a mistake? Yeah, pound the crap out of them. Yeah, that’ll show 'em!
Most pitted people don’t get threads for simple mistakes, they get them from letting their asshole-ness shine.
And those of you (the majority) who are more reasonable, why are you helping to perpetuate the childish negativity? If someone is stuck in a pathetic quagmire of drivel, how about offering a solution?
What would the fun of that be?

I think that this post qualifies as a rant. But, oh yeah. One more thing. Many of you really are blathering, infantile, quasi-literate simpletons who can’t spell shit without sounding it out. And don’t get me started on your grammer [sic]. Although you are obviously entitled to participate in this message board, you may be more at home in some type of remedial message board, y’know, for the slow learners.

Sieg heil!! I didn’t realize that the grammar nazis were having a recruiting drive this month.

**How difficult is it, really, to learn how to spell? There are many 8-year olds who have pretty well mastered it. It’s one thing to make a typing error, or to leave out a word, or have a minor lapse as you compose a post. It’s another thing to have no clue how to do write properly. And it’s not as if spelling is a big dark secret. It involves basic pattern recognition. Oh, I forgot. That’s one of the elements of intelligence. Don’t want to muddy the waters here. **
Some people’s brains aren’t wired to learn spelling easily. Mine isn’t. I’ve put a fair amount of effort into learning to spell, which must in my case be done by sheer memorization, but you know what? I still make mistakes. Anyone who isn’t happy with that can go fuck themselves. Oh dear, there’s that hostility again…

**So keep giving people a piece of your mind. Just don’t become a half-wit. **
Massive head injuries aside, I don’t see this being a major problem for most dopers.

Because this way is much more fun.

It is delivered to me by mail from various credit card companies, by televison from various networks, by telephone from telemarketers. In short, the world can be full of inspiration for annoyance.

The only time we are bothered by issues brought up by minors is if the minor is a troll. There are some perfectly intelligent and worthwhile Dopers on the board who have yet to reach the age of adulthood.

[sub]…what?[/sub]

Yesterday I raked the leaves. [/hums “Circle of Life”]

I want things to get better. But sometimes, a good sharp insult is the only remedy when dealing with a lackwit.

So you’re saying that everyone is on their best behavior at all times? I seriously doubt that is the case with a lot of people.

Possible? Sure. Anything’s possible.

A reasonable discussion is always a good thing. However, attempting a reasonable discussion with a lunatic is about as productive as trying to explain quantum mechanics to a cocker spaniel.

I would be so happy that I would buy the world a Coke.

Only if it means that I get the Nobel Peace Prize.

[Foghorn Leghorn]Catharsis, son! It’s called catharsis![/Foghorn Leghorn]

Look it up in the dictionary, and you’ll see why so many Pit threads are an example of it.

No, not yet. I do have an 18 month old nephew that I adore.

There is a difference between dealing with misbehaving kids in real life and dealing with adult lackwits in real life.

Well, some of us try to act like kids at heart. And some Dopers are adults stuck in a kid’s body.

I went to school at first because it was the law, and then because I wanted to earn a college degree. I continued on to graduate school to earn a master’s in the field I wanted to work in.

I don’t recall ever taking Smarmy Cockiness 101 in college though…I just checked my transcripts, and nope, it isn’t on there. I believe that class is generally taught on a peer-to-peer level, and the cost of the course is usually included in the price of admission to Adolescence. Some persons, regrettably, never take the upper level course, Beyond Smarmy Cockiness 301, and remain stuck in their behavior pattern through adulthood.

I guess this must mean that you should now embark on writing your masterpiece bestseller, Human Interaction, for you apparently know everything there is to know on that subject.

You haven’t been around here long, have you?

[sub]This is beginning to sound like the rant of someone who just lost an argument very, very badly.[/sub]

Where’s Gaudere’s Law when you need it?

Sounds like someone just got into an argument and went down in flames.

It occurs to me that if I gave the OP enough of my mind to compensate for said OPer’s lack of mental capacity, I would become what s/he specifically warns against…

T’was fun for a while though, eh?

“I read far above my age level, my favorite author in the 6th grade was Tom Clancy.”

Does not compute. Does not compute.

I can barely spell. In fact, I would not be at all surprised to find that a significant number of highschool drop-outs have spelling skills far superior to mine. I am a voracious reader, I attended a “top 20” (FWIW) university, and currently attend a top-tier law school. Can’t spell worth a shit. I feel I am able to express myself well in prose, and I am a confident public speaker, but when it comes to spelling I simply struggle. Oddly enough I was recently going through some old papers and came across some standardized test scores from the third grade (8 years old right?) In all categories I scored PHS (Past High School) except spelling, where I scored at the level of a first grader. Anyway, I think there is something to the innateness of spelling. Oh, I also struggle with foreign languages, they simply do not sink in with me.

For iampunha, with my compliments.

I have an innate sense of grammar and spelling (more or less, but I can usually correct something by what looks or feels right), I have always been a voracious reader, and I have had a talent with the English language that has consistently surpassed anyone else I’ve ever known, but I cannot learn a foreign language to save my life.

I’ve tried. I tried Spanish twice and German once. I have been to Austria and I have all the reason in the world to learn German, as a sizeable percentage of my patralineal relatives speak it as a first language, but I have never managed it. It just never registers with me.

I can learn computer languages very easily. Picking up a new language in a style I’m familiar with is, for me, more or less a matter of reading some example code and looking up any unfamiliar commands or constructions. I taught myself C over a weekend, and I absorbed Intel 4004 assembly by reading the reference card and hacking around with a cross-assembler and an emulator. I’ve written a multiplication routine in Intel 4004 assembly (the chip has no (documented) multiplication opcode), but I’d be hard-pressed to survive in Vienna (a city I have visited numerous times) without an interpreter.

Damn it! If Ad Lib had only posted this as a response here instead of in the BBQ Pit. I was denied the wisdom of the Ad Lib for two who days before he/she/it changed my life!

All of this useless, tired anger I’ve been carrying around with me! What was I thinking? It’s probably best to just let it all out now. And, lacking a worthy target, I’ll take Ad Lib as a willing volunteer.

[rant]

Ad Lib you dip shit.

[/rant]

That feels better. And it met all the criteria.

Actually, it didn’t, but who cares. After all, it’s just some banned troll.

You’ve got a flare for sarcasm? Cool! I’ve got a Roman candle for irony!

[sub]Sorry. Couldn’t resist. I’ll shut up now.[/sub]
