I was wondering if there might be use of a thread for really foreign films. I am not sure what I mean by this exactly, but I think I mean the films from other countries that never break through to the rest of the world. I do not mean films like “Il Postino”, “Nikita” nor anything by Kurosawa, Kieslowski, Almodóvar etc.
I am thinking more of the films that never make it to a worldwide audience, but are all the same bloody good.
This is either a really good, or a really bad idea
Two Swedish films to start the ball rolling. Underjordans Hemlighet - A childrens film about two young boys in a hospital. Tomten är far till alla barnen - A christmas film revolving around the complicated family situations in modern Sweden. Extremely funny!
Forgot to mention, rock guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei starred in Samurai Fiction as the ‘villain’, as well as composed the music for it. Electric guitar goes rather well with swordfights, I’ve noticed.
Check out films from India. Apparently, moast of the popular films made in India are musicals. These Indian musicals (even the really popular ones) don’t seem to make it into the Western world much, though.
I don’t know if these films made it to U.S. thatres but they’re damn good. The latter is kinda meant for young mexican audiences but foreigners should like it just as well, you can check it out at www.amarteduele.com.mx
There is a Nordic film (Norweigian director/Sami language/Finnish Kalevala myth) called Pathfinder (1987), in the original Sami language with subtitles. The story is about a young man (boy, really) whose village is plundered by robbers. The boy survives, joins another village, learns from the village’s pathfinder, and is able to cleverly save them from the robbers. Revenge, snow, reindeer, shamanism, snow, heartpounding action. All good stuff set 1000 years ago.
