In this recent thread on the gender breakdown of members on the Dope, we find this sterling interchange. A lovely little joke about how there aren’t enough ladies to go around, so the men will have to double up.

The implication is that you’re sharing the womenfolk. As a womenfolk, I am offended. I was going to say not amused but then I thought I’d just be honest. Offended. I am not a commodity.

I got this dismissive post back from Kayaker. I am a “little girl”, who just didn’t get his joke. Maybe I would have if it was just us women here, or something. A classic non-apology apology.

Somehow I doubt these same posters would be making jokes, if the poll were about the breakdown by race, about how some of the white posters would need to share black posters. Let’s all try to be better than the society that made us.

This thread is eye opening. It’s really not that hard to not be an asshole – even when you slip up, it’s no big deal if you apologize for it and try to learn from it. It’s a shame that some folks are too stubborn to consider this.
