"Really I do. . . ."

This is a quote that occurs in numerous cartoons from the 1940’s.

It’s typically said in some pseudo-Southern accent, generally by a female character.

Apparently it is some reference to some movie.

The obvious guess is “Gone With the Wind,” but I don’t recall that line–and I was looking for it.

Any ideas???

I always thought it was a line one used when doing a Kate Hepburn impersonation. Kinda like “Judy, Judy, Judy” for Cary Grant.

Yup, me too…that’s classic Hepburn from one of the really early movies.

but the other cartoon Kate line, “the calla lilies are in bloom again,” comes from Stage Door.
