I know this has already been resolved, but I just re-checked the thread to see if there were any new posts, and even though I knew it was coming, I laughed out loud at this line:

There’s nothing wrong with “Go fuck yourself.” At least it’s sex with someone you love.
As a 400+ pound person, the correct phrasing is “Get jiggly with it”. Trust me.
heh.
On a related note, I thought friedo pointed out that he, himself, was a large person?
Not the most apologetic of tone, but I think it’s to mean he wasn’t doing it to deliberately insult, at least.
That would have been my take, although on checking various definitions I found (as you did) that the term is defined more widely. I understand that “go fuck yourself” is designed to be inflammatory and for that reason I understand the warning.
I think we need to be cautious about what is taken as an insult though. There are it seems to me two types of insult: the type where (as **WhyNot ** says) you say something about someone (eg “you are stupid”) and the type where you say something that people don’t like because it offends their sensibilities.
The difficulty with reprimanding for the latter is that it so subjective. I don’t give a damn if someone tells me to go fuck myself (I accept their admission that they just lost the argument). Others find it insulting if you voice views that are strongly contradictory of their own.
As I’ve gotten older and crossed the 10% body fat line I must say things do seem a little more jiggly than they used to be.
W/Re to the OP:
Have you ever seen the movie Popeye?
You know, the one with Robin Williams?
Are you willing to admit it in a public forum?
Do you remember Olive Oyl’s Dad, Cole Oyl?
The guy who went around saying “You owe me an apology.”?
That’s the face I put on the PC people and the Rightious Indignation crowd.
Sure, “Go Fuck Yourself” is a general insult. As is “Eat Shit and Die” & “Piss Off”.
Also the Fatty McFattington comments were also general insults.
If someone takes general insults to heart then I believe Cole Oyl represents them just fine.
An insult would be “you suck at fucking yourself.” “Go Fuck Yourself” is a directive. And offensive.
Is offensive the same as insulting?
What about when Dick Cheney says it? Is it an insult then, or do we just get our faces shot off? I mean, after all, he’s a fatass too…
I’m not real keen on the “I’m blank so I can say unkind things about blanks” line of justification for certain types of “humor”. And I’m doubly unkeen on it when the poster waits until other people get their panties in a twist before saying “I’m blank so it’s ok”. No. If you want to use being a member of the group as a justification for making a comment which would be inappropriate coming from someone outside the group, you had better make your group membership explicit at the time of the post.
And it still may rub people the wrong way–I’m overweight, but not overweight enough to be a “person of size” as used in the original thread, but I found the alternate names for persons of size to be more obnoxious than humorous. Offensive enough to warrent a warning? Maybe not–but while I sympathize with those upset by friedo’s post, I am a firm believer that the correct response when viewing behaviour on this message board that you want to be discouraged–even if it isn’t explicitly against the rules–is to report the post. “He started it” is not an appropriate respose to a moderator warning.
I enjoyed nd n8’s post. If you’re a person of size you could give a flying rats less what someone thinks. I’m a “a fat fucker” but when I get up on you, you move or get run over. Another big fucker I know phrased it best when he told me “You move like a herd”. If you’re narrow ass doesn’t get out of the way you’ll be trampled underfoot like a twig.
Poppy don’t play.
I will however ocasionlly issue a pardon me. Don’t move fast enough?
Prepare to get run down, Bitch.
One of the few, one of the proud, the herd.
Oh, I almost forgot, To ye of the narrow ass, don’t like it? Bust a move, bitch.
It’s like catching a brick wall. With a shank of propositions.
See? That’s a healthy attitude. Don’t get down on yourself, get up on yourself. Be proud of yourself no matter who you are or what you look like. Exhibit a positive attitude and the world may start to shed it’s biased attitudes. We can be a herd. We can expect to be treated fairly. We can smash the unrealistic image expectations and move toward a genuinly healthy society instead of an anorexic shade of what society should be. If we can change our attitudes, if we can eshew self esteem, if we can bond together we can change the world.
I’ll get right on that.
As soon as I finish this pint of Ben & Jerrys.
(There may be a reason that I’ve long passed beyond the 10% BF% and started approaching the physical manifestation of my perceived BMI. I still got the guns though, I still got the guns.)
eschew: to avoid habitually especially on moral or practical grounds
Per Eschew Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster
I don’t think that’s quite what you meant.
ETA: Or is it, and that’s the point?
Er… Um… Perhaps I meant espouse.
But upon re-reading it I can kind of see a point as originally written. Reject the shallow “Self-Esteem” media culture in favor of a genuinly positive self image and realization of self worth.
Meh… That’s a stretch… I just chose the wrong word, oops.
Your dilemma was mine; I genuinely wasn’t sure which you meant. Apparently neither were you!
