I want to like this show. I like the characters and I really like the way the hero has let his buddies in on his secret instead of having to explain why Clark Kent keeps ducking into the supply room. The three of them out on a mission are the fun parts.
But I like them more than I like the writing. The stoner attitude, especially Sock, needs to be dialed back. Even dialing him down to 11 would help. Andi practically throwing Sam down on the floor while he dithers is also annoying.
But what drives me crazy is that the Devil apparently knows he’s working for an hour-long television show. I turned off ep. 3 when this started again, so they may have explained something by the end, but needing a bounty hunter to return souls to hell before they can kill more innocent people and then making his job as hard as possible because telling him anything useful would end the show in ten minutes is already a stopping point.
They need to vary the formula in upcomings episodes or they’ll drive a really promising show into the ground.
I think that’s the nature of the devil, though. Making you do something wouldn’t be devilish enough. Making you do it while making it hard for you to do — that’s Satan.
I’d like to see a scene where Sock drives the Devil nuts, just irritating him, without the Devil being able to do anything about it. Probably won’t happen, though.
I have a feeling Andi is going to get clued in before long, and I imagine once Sam gets a hold of the contract, we might move beyond the Escaped Soul of the Week concept.
I liked this last one. Seemed to move at a faster pace. And I liked that Sam had to go mano a mano (well, sort of) with the escaped soul. Putting Andi in harm’s way made for some suspense. Good to see the Hispanic guy getting more lines; his bit with the bird was funny. I think too that Andi is going to be brought in on it. Having a female ghost buster could improve the show. I think too that Sam seeing the contract will mix things up a bit - hopefully for the better. I’ll keep watching.
Saw last night’s ep and have now given up on the show. Not that it’s bad, but it seems to be going nowhere (unlike Chuck, which has interesting developments each week). I love Ray Wise and Sock can be funny, but the lead is so completely charmless, and the love story is sorely in need of some kind of life, that I can’t find myself holding interest. It’s off my DVR, though if I’m not doing anything and it happens to be on, I’d watch.
One thing I like about the show so far is that it’s good at dashing my expectations that characters (particularly Sam) will behave like idiots in order to maintain the formula.
I thought that Sam and his dad keeping his secret from his mom was really stupid, and that didn’t last an episode.
Likewise, I’m impressed with Sam’s drive to actually look at the contract that his parents signed instead of just going along for the ride.
That said, we’re obviously in for some type of situation wherein Sam has to volunteer hi services to the Devil for the rest of his life in order to save Andi or something. Season finale?
I could still do without the hispanic guy, and Andi is still unbelievably hot. I also couldn’t watch the bits with the escaped soul without thinking of GOB Bluth and his Sword of Destiny.
I liked this episode a little bit more this time. This whole time, the Devil has had the upper hand in forcing Sam to do his will. But we find out that his “minions” are white collar criminals who hate their jobs and are incompetent, so he needs Sam. What if Sam’s contract contains a loophold that while not completely freeing him from the Devil’s clutches, at least alters the balance of power somewhat? I’d love to see an episode where the tables are turned and Sam takes the Devil by surprise.
