Recall of Gov. Gavin Newsom of California

Who are those people? Kevin Faulconer could probably be a decent competitor for Newsom next year during the regular election, but I am at a loss as to who else may have any traction. I think Faulconer is just doing the minimal to get his name out there in prep for next year’s race, but is not spending a lot of time and resources trying to “win” right now. The recall is an opportunity to get some air time, but that’s about it for 2021.

The only ones polling are
John Cox, businessman (Republican)- trumpier than trump and a maroon carpetbagger. His bear is more popular (and smarter)
Rep. Doug Ose, former California congressman (Republican)
Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympic athlete and transgender celebrity activist (Republican) People are treating this as a joke.
Kevin Faulconer, former San Diego Mayor (Republican)- a reasonable candidate, who I would have thought smarter than this. Maybe for the publicity for next year as you say?

There are also dozens of others:

As well as a few lefties who want to hurt Newsom.

And the number of EVs that they would carry with them as a home state doesn’t hurt.

Attention to detail, people. Attention to detail!:

In California, Democrats control the legislature, and dominate the courts. Would a different governor be able to to anything different than Newsom is doing?

Are there any issues on which Newsom’s position is significantly different from the majority of the legislators?

I will be voting NO on the recall itself. Newsom is no worse than the typical California governor. But, I’ll need to decide who to vote for in the unfortunate case that the recall prevails. Leaving it blank is not an option I will take; I’m not giving up my political power. There’s over forty candidates.

Anyone have opinions on which candidate with a chance to win is least objectionable?

They are all objectionable. A no vote is a vote for Newsom. Any “progressive” on the ballot is a stooge for the GOP and are no more deserving of my vote than the Republican that will inevitably get the nod if the recall succeeds.

But not voting leaves it to the Republicans to choose the next governor, if the worst happens and the recall succeeds (probably because of voter apathy on the “No” side).

But you are right, any vote for a Republican or Progressive is a vote that might put a Republican or a stooge for the Right into office.

So my solution is to vote for a candidate as a form of insurance, adding votes to a candidate that, if that candidate wins, will stain the Right/Republican forces behind this farce. At the very least, it will drop the relative percentage of the leading Republicans.

I haven’t done any research, but I skimmed the list and (after voting “No” on the recall) I’m voting for:

Angelyne

I think that if every “No on recall” voter also voted for Angelyne, it would send a message about this whole imbroglio.

Exactly. I’m not going to let the Republicans only choose the next governor if the worst comes to happen.

I do think voter apathy is on our side. Most people tend to vote NO on issues by default.

Or not show up at all, which is a YES

I like this idea.

The trumpers have their underwear in a bunch and call Newsom “The Dictator” simply due to his rather well done covid restrictions.

A vote for “yes” is a vote for covidiots and maskholes.

I had not considered this, but it is a very good point, and what the perpetrators of this recall are probably anticipating. There is a non-zero chance the recall will succeed, and if people just mark “No” and then leave the candidate selection blank, then those who DO select someone have more sway. I am going with “No” and Angelyne as well!

And if three people, I say three people vote “No” and Angelyne, well it will be a movement!

California dopers need to spread the word. I remember the year that the Royal’s nearly swept the AL All-star starting spots - in the age of Twitter it isn’t that hard to get a fad moving (although in the Royal’s case, a lot of invalid/hijacked email addresses were involved (I personally used the ones from my spam folder), so this will be harder).

I did- On FB. Who is with me?

Oooh, I’d love to be a movement! Count me in for “no” + “Angelyne”.

Last time I went “no” + Larry Flynt. This time you can add me to the “no” + Angelyne camp.
Sounds like she’s gonna be able keep a list

Hmm, hadn’t thought of this before: California recall: Governor race has Democrats nervous about Feinstein seat - CNNPolitics

NY Times article on the recall today (probably paywalled). Some takeaways:

The vote is expected to come down to whether Democrats can mobilize enough of the state’s enormous base to counteract Republican enthusiasm for Mr. Newsom’s ouster. Recent polls of likely voters show a dead heat, despite math that suggests the governor should ultimately prevail.

And Mr. Newsom’s supporters are encountering a striking degree of ambivalence and distraction.

Polls indicate that majorities of Californians approve of Mr. Newsom’s policies, but when surveys are narrowed to the most likely voters, his margin thins.

A statewide poll in mid-July by the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, found that likely voters were almost evenly split over whether to oust the governor, with 47 percent saying they would vote to recall him and 50 percent saying they would retain him, an edge that just barely exceeded the poll’s margin of error. Subsequent polls have affirmed those results.

Sounds like this could be a lot closer than folks here were predicting earlier. :grimacing:

Yikes. I thought he’d easily win.
