Reccommend a good Indian Movie

Well, so far I have not seen one that was at least one bit entertaining. Any suggestions?

Define “entertaining”. Do you like musicals or not? Do you like social dramas or “lighter” fare? What have you already seen so we have some sense of what has failed to deliver for you thus far.

Without knowing what you’re looking for I liked the following two movies (neither being particularily comic but well done):

Monsoon Wedding
Salaam Bombay

Baiju Bawra (1952).

Director S. Ray’s Apu trilogy:
Pather Panchali (1955).
Aparajito (1957).
The World of Apu (1959).

Mother India (1957). The Indian Gone With the Wind.
Pyaasa (1958).
The Music Room (1958).
Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959).
Charulata (1964).
Salaam Bombay! (1988).
Monsoon Wedding (2001).

“Bride and Prejudice” was hilarious, especially if you’ve read Jane Austen.

I assume you’re thinking of Bollywood stuff, all lighthearted romance with plenty of chaste song and dance numbers. If you want something meatier and artsier, there’s Satyajit Ray’s Apu trilogy.

“Bend it like Beckham”. Not an Indian movie as such, but an English movie steeped with Indian culture.

The 2002 Devdas is my favorite movie to show people who arn’t too well aquainted with Bollywood movies. It doesn’t skimp on the singing and dancing, but it has high production values, a story with some real emotion in it, beautiful sets and some real star power. It’s worth it just to look at the scenery…and Aishwarya Rai.

Does Dances With Wolves count?

Anaamika seemed particularly happy to have bought the mahabharat, but that’s a little spendy.

Gandhi?

Dances with Wolves doesn’t count, silly: where were the Indians? Try Smoke Signals.
