One of my pet peeves is when one poster makes a statement and another poster takes issue with word choice and then the fun begins.
Since I’m not supposed to emote, I cannot share with you how boring it is to “watch” this tennis match again, and again. Hell, it’s almost a meme in and of itself.
Take it outside or like someone upthread said, get a room.
Another pet peeve: threads that are started to “appreciate” other Dopers–and the fact that I am never included in any of them has nothing to do with my opinion of them.
Of course I remember, and I’m still gratefull that you did it. What I meant by “random assholes” is people in general. We all are, after all, assholes to someone else, no matter what we do. I certainly wasn’t trying to single you out as being an asshole, and FWIW, I agree with many of the comments you posted about lissner, and by my comments, I was hoping to get him to STFU before the thread ended in orgy of obscenities, death threats and mass bannings. So please don’t take my comments personally.
It’s a PET FUCKING PEEVE. I thought I made that clear. I don’t think I have a history with lissener: I’ve noticed him, and he’s mildly irritated me and mildly interested me on different occasions, but no history. I pointed out a couple of things he does that irritate me in this thread, and his response has been a lot of long posts; the recent ones have given my pagedown key a workout, because who gives a shit?
Oh, and lissener, I woulda totally kicked your ass at the Christmas soccer game.

One last comment on the memes thing: I still hate the word, but if its meaning is shifting as a vague, catchall term for sloganeering, I won’t stand in its way; how does one stop the tide? I think it leads to poor communication, but if my paradigm must be leveraged before I can visualize its actualization, so be it.
Dude, this was a thread about general boardwide peeves. You turned it into a personal attack on a specific person. YOU took it there. And then you tried to slither your way out of it with dishonest denials and oblique insults. I got piled on because I try to keep my anger honest and straightforward; you mostly got a pass because you were sneaky enough to disguise and deflect it. THere were plenty of people’s individual peeves that I disagreed with, but it seemed clearly inappropriate to hijack this thread to call them out and turn the debate on them directly and specifically. You honestly think you’re gonna get the same reaction from expressing a boardwide peeve and targeting a specific individual for a sarcastic and personal criticism?
You’re all cowardly ding-dong-ditch. You apparently think you can disguise your personal snark within a list of general complaints and get away with it. You want to have your attack and eat it too. You used misdirection and denial, and the cover of the crowd, to score a personal hit, and you got called on it. Have enough balls, in future, to step forward and say what you mean.
I’ve been thinking about starting a poll thread in IMHO about whether other Dopers perceive a connotation of falsehood accreting to that word, at least in a political context. Anyone else who’d like to start it, don’t wait for me, I’m in lazy-ass mode this week.
Not really, no. I’ve said exactly what I think of you throughout. I advise you to go back and read, and not create a novel about it. I find you mildly annoying (although having your hysteria turned up to 11 on me is moving you from the “mildly annoying” camp into the “crazy freak” camp), said what I thought about you, and admitted that it was you who reminded me of the two peeves I mentioned.

lissener: I’ve been reading this thread for a few days now. I have no dog in this fight, I don’t know either of you from Adam. So please, take this in all the impartiality as it’s intended: you’re coming across as a raving loon. If you spend the holidays typing pages full of defensive posts against an attack only you perceive as such, it’s time to take a step back, and take a deep breath.
As far as meme is concerned, I steer clear of trendy bullshit-bingo-inducing words in my own language, and I sure as fuck am not gonna change that attitude for another language.
Thanks for clarifying. I did take this personally, so I appreciate you telling me that it wasn’t aimed at me. I think I was feeling a little over-sensitive when I read it. I can’t imagine why.
I apparently loom much larger in your imagination than in reality, twickster. You wanna show me one instance where I’ve carried hostility from one thread over into an unrelated thread? My general strategy is to try to behave better than the people who’ve acted badly toward me. I don’t always succeed, and I may assign a greater value to debating honestly than to repressing my anger, so where I feel like I’m taking a high road, you might feel quite differently. Still, I’d like to be given the opportunity to address any situation where you feel I’ve kept an “enemies list,” or (as I assume you mean by that) carried a grudge from one thread to another.
The strawmanization of lissener here is pretty silly. As far as I can tell, he or she’s done nothing but respond to statements made to or about him/her.
