I used to have the whole fargin’ thing memorized, but that was 7th grade and it’s been a few years.

A Scout is: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

The good ol’ Boy Scout law. Had to memorize it, and was having problems until one of my Scoutmasters suggested memorizing one half at a time. And damned if that didn’t work like gangbusters.

I have large bits of “The Walrus and the Carpenter” memorized, but I still don’t really know a few scattered stanzas, unfortunately.

Somebody took Jabberwocky already. Darn.
My mother’s siblings: JoanDorothyJosephHenryAnneJoelAviChatzFeivyJoshJoyceMomJay (which, for maximum impressiveness, must be said at top speed in one breath). I can do all 71 of their children also (although slower), in age order by family, but I’m not willing to type it.
I used to be able to do fairly impressive chunks of Biblical stuff (in Hebrew), but it’s been several years since I had to memorize them and they’re fading. Plus transliterating it all would get annoying, although memorizing Ha’Azinu (Deuteronomy 32) is definitely the toughest memorization that I’ve ever done.

While we’re doing Lewis Carroll:
“Would you walk a little faster?” said the whiting to the snail.
"There’s a porpoise close behind us and he’s treading on my tail.
"See how eagerly the turtles and the lobsters all advance?
"They are waiting on the shingle – will you come and join the dance?
"Will you, won’t you, will you won’t you, will you join the dance?
"Will you, won’t you will you won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

"You can really have no notion how delightful it will be,
“When they take us up and throw us, with the lobsters out to sea.”
But the snail replied, “Too far, too far!” and gave a look askance.
Said he thanked him very kindly but he would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not, could not, would not join the dance.
Would not, could not, would not, could not, could not join the dance.

“What matters it how far we go?” his scaly friend replied.
"There is another shore, you know, upon the other side.
"The farther is from England, the nearer is to France.
"Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance.
"Will you, won’t you, will you won’t you, will you join the dance?
"Will you, won’t you will you won’t you, won’t you join the dance?

And the original, a translation, and a sort of homage to a poem by Clément Marot:

Ma mignonne, O my sweet, Mademoiselle,
Je vous donne May you meet May I tell
Le bonjour. A good day. My sad lot?
Le séjour Where you stay I have got
Est prison. Is a jail. To translate
Guérison Health, my frail, (Which I hate)
Recouvrez, Please regain Some old verse.
Puis ouvrez Then unchain Could be worse,
Votre porte,     Your room's door,   I suppose;
Et qu'on sorte And thence soar Goodness knows
Vitement Lustily; I'm too dense
Car Clément Clement thee To make sense
Le vous mande. Does command. Of old French.
Va, friande Go, gourmande, Some ill wench
De ta bouche Whose tongue red Lies abed
Qui se couche Lies abed When instead
En danger In retreat, She'd prefer
Pour manger Off to eat (I infer)
Confitures. Jams, as may'st. To eat sweets.
Si tu dures If thou stay'st Just three beats
Trop malade,     Sick and fade,      In each line;
Couleur fade A pale shade The design
Tu prendras, Thus accrues, Is not great.
Et perdras And wilt lose Twenty-eight
L'embonpoint.    Thy round thigh.    Lines (not prose);
Dieu te doint God grant thy Well, here goes:
Santé bonne, Health complete, "Soon get well,
Ma mignonne. O my sweet. Mademoiselle."

I consulted the book and found that I got a few lines wrong. It’s been quite a while since I last recited this.
The other night, from cares exempt
I slept, and what d’you think I dreamt.
I dreamt that somehow I had come
To dwell in topsy-turvy-dom

Where nice is nasty, nasty, nice
Where vice is virtue, virtue, vice
Where white is black and black is white
Where night is dad and day is night

Where babies, quite to there surprise,
Are born astonishingly wise
With every science on their lips
And art at all their fingertips

For as their nurses dandle them
They crow binomial theorem
Explaing views, quite strange to us
On differential calculus

But though babies, as I have said
Are born with wisdon in their head
They must forget it, if they can,
Before they shall be called a man

For that which we call folly here
Is wisdom in that favored sphere
The wisdom we so highly prized
Is blatant folly in their eyes

A boy, if he would push his way
Must learn some nonsense every day
And cut, to carry out this view,
His wisdom teeth, and wisdom too

Hisortians burn their midnight oils
Intent on giant-killers toils
And sages close their sleepy eyes
To other sages’ lullabies

A magistrates, to duty bound
Commit all robbers that are found
But there, the beaks, so people said
Commit all robberies instead

Our judges, pure and wise in tone,
Know crime from theory alone
And glean the motvies of a thief
From books and popular belief

But there, a judge who wants to prime
His mind with true ideas of crime
Derives them from the common sense
Of practical experience

Policemen march all folks away
Who practice virtue everyday
Of course, I mean to say, you know,
What we call virtue here below

For only scoundrels dare to do
What we consider just and true
And only good men do in fact,
What we should think a dirty act

But strangest of these social twirls
The girls are boy, and boys and girls
The men are women too, but then
Per contra, women all are men

To one who to tradition clings
This seems an awkward state of things
But if to think it out you try
It doesn’t really signify

With them, as surely as can be,
A sailor should be sick at see
And not a passenger may sail
Who cannot smoke right through a gale

A soldier, save by rarest luck
Is always shot for showing pluck
That is, if any can be found
With pluck enough to fire a round

“How strange,” I said, to one I saw
“You’ve quite upset our every law
However can you get along
So systematically wrong”

“Dear me,” my mad informant said,
"Have you no eyes within your head
You sneer when you your hat should doff
Why, we begin where you leave off

“your wiset men are very far
Less learned than our babies are”
I mused awhile and then, oh me
I framed this brilliant repartee

"Although your babes are wiser far
Than our most valued sages are,
Your sages, with their toys and cots,
Are duller than our idiots

But this remark, I grieve to state,
Came just a little bit too late
For as I framed it in my head,
I woke and found myself in bed

Still I could wish that 'stead of here
My lot were in that favored sphere
Where greatest fools bear off the bell
I ought to do extremely well

[aside] Hmm… hadn’t heard that one. Because the so-called “Locrian” mode is not of much use in Renaissance and even 17th-18th century modal theory I usually make do with the mnemonic: I Don’t Particularly Like Modes Anyway. [/aside]

Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae volutatus. Laudamus te, benedicimus te, adoramus te, glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnum gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, rex coelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patrem, misere nobis. Quoniam tu solus sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus altissimus, Jesu Christe, cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris, Amen.

Credo in unum Deum, Patrem omnipotentum… (ugh I always crash and burn in the Credo. Never mind.)

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Sorry, close but no cigar: James Bond was played by (in order):
Barry Nelson, Sean Connery, David Niven[sup]1[/sup], George Lazenby, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan.

The “official” James Bonds, in order, were:
Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan[sup]2[/sup], Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan.

The 23 auxiliary (helping) verbs are[sup]3[/sup]:

1-There are a lot of agents named “James Bond” in Casino Royale, but only one was the real Bond; the rest were just to confuse SMERSH.

2-Brosnan was hired to be the Official Bond following Moore, but the producers of “Remington Steele” renewed his contract at the last minute, and Dalton, who had twice declined the role, reluctantly accepted it.

3-Many lists will include “being” but not ought. They are incorrect. My students are required to memorize this list every year, and explain the placement and function of every one. Trivia: “might” is the past tense of “may”.

4-Woo hoo! I got the coding right the first time.

In the not too distant future,
Next Sunday A.D.
There was a guy named Joel,
not too different from you or me.

He worked at Gizmonic Institute,
just another face in a red jumpsuit.
He did a good job cleaning up the place,
but his bosses didn’t like him
so they shot him into space.

We’ll send him cheesy movies,
the worst we can find. (La La La)
He’ll have to sit and watch them all,
and we’ll monitor his mind.

Now keep in mind Joel can’t control
where the movies begin or end.
Because he used those special parts
to make his robot friends.

Crooooooooow!

If you’re wondering how
he eats and breathes,
and other science facts.
Just repeat to yourself,
it’s just a show,
I should really just relax.

For Mystery Science Theater 3000!
