Recomend a movie for me to watch based on a list of some of my favoite films.

Many great suggestions so far, but I spied three silent movies on your list and you’re still a bit short on those. You might risk a peak at Eerie Tales, Richard Oswald’s take on stories of Robert Louis Stevenson and Edgar Allan Poe from 1919, starring Anita Berber and Conrad Veidt (of Caligari fame). Throw in Orlacs Hands and The Student of Prague (1926’s version) while you’re at it. For a newer (almost) silent movie, there’s La Antena. All pure eye candy for lovers of expressionist movies, where Edgar G. Ulmer’s not silent The Black Cat should fit as well.

For weird horror talkies I’ve got Messiah of Evil, the dirty cousin of Dead & Buried, shockful of atmosphere (on a shoestring budget) and Alucarda, which is a lovely mix of hex-, mex-, nun- and (tame, Mexico 1977!) dykesploitation with some stunning imagery. Let’s not forget Dellamorte Dellamore by Michele Soavi (an apprentice of Dario Argento), it sure doesn’t get any quirkier than that. Forget flowers and bonbons, the way to a woman’s heart leads straight through some nice, wet charnel!

Hm, a bit heavy on the horror…here’s some sad, funny, heart-warming stuff with tons of hilarious dialogue for good measure: Everything is illuminated, Whitnail & I, Sunshine Cleaning and Happy-go-lucky.

Don’t forget Twelve Monkeys!

You seem to kind of like quirky or serious comedies with just a touch of dark crazy in them.

I’d recommend Girl, Interrupted

I saw bits of it, and I’ve always wanted to see the whole thing but never got around to it or forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder.

I heard I would like **Dark City **around the time when I first saw **The Truman Show **I’ve seen the trailer, and I have to say that it’s dark tone turned me off.

I’ve always wanted to see Twelve Monkeys. Thanks for the reminder as well KarlGauss.

There are too many movies I want to see.

As much as I love movies, I usually can’t sit through one without some serious break time. I still haven’t seen ALL of Boyhood yet, despite being very impressed with it, (aside from a few things that irked me; like when the kids interacted with other kids… which is difficult to pull off authentically). I was suppose to finish it last Monday, but I just had to take another break from it.

So. It takes me a while to get to everything. I will no doubt look to this thread in the future.

It’s pretty good. One tip if you watch it: FFWD the beginning until you get to the scene of a guy waking up in a bathtub, which is a minute or two into the movie.

The original movie started with the guy waking up in the bathtub…very minor spoiler:…with no memory of who or where he is.
The studios felt that it was confusing to the audience, so made the director put in a voice overlay at the start to explain the entire plot of the movie.

The problem with this is that the audience confusion was intentional, meant to put the audience in the same frame of mind as the guy in the bathtub. We discover as he discovers. The minute or two voice-over exposition at the start essentially ruins the entire movie.

We have similar tastes as well, although yours are a little darker than mine.

I’m guessing you’ve already seen it, but Three Kings could be one for you. David O. Russell at his finest. (Sorry, I Heart Huckabees fan.)

My other thought was District 9, which has already been listed. 12 Monkeys, yup, same thing.

Oh, if you like mockumentaries and like filmmaking, find a small indie called “And God Spoke.” In that same vein, Living in Oblivion is also a must see, probably more so.
