Recommend a 1970s disaster/armageddon movie

…that I haven’t already seen. All I can think of is The Andromeda Strain, but I’ve seen that. Maybe one of the Planet of the Apes sequels – isn’t there one where they go to (modern day) Earth or something? Not so much “disaster” movie as futuristic sci-fi: not so much Airport or The Towering Inferno as Logan’s Run (seen it, own the DVD).

And cheesy, schlocky, whatever – bad acting, silly period costumes and haircuts, low-budget recommendations – are encouraged! I’m in the mood for something stupid, ya know?

The Poseidon Adventure - a classic of the genre. A cruise ship capsizes, trapping passengers inside.

The Swarm - African “Killer” Bees invade the US.

Kingdom of the Spiders - William Shatner vs hordes of tarantulas!

Check out the Robert Altman / Paul Newman film Quintet.

It’s a strange little 1970s film set during a future ice age where the survivors participate in a deadly game. Sort of cheesy and artsy at the same time, and has some striking scenes…

Warning: Wiki links contain spoilers.

The Last Days Of Man On Earth (aka The Final Programme)

The Man Who Fell To Earth

The Bed-Sitting Room

.

Saturn 3 (it’s from 1980 - hope that’s close enough).

Damnation Alley, with the one and only Jan-Michel Vincent.

Waaaayyy stupid. But fun.

Logan’s Run. We re-watched this a couple of years ago, and it was fascinating - not the best movie ever, but full of interesting ideas.

Classic. Also “Soylent Green” (even though it’s pre-spoiled, still worth watching.)

Oh yeah. I watched that sooo many years ago - have to watch it again someday.

Maybe Westworld? Not all that futuristic, but certainly a disaster movie.

Along similar lines, there’s The Stepford Wives.

And I hadn’t thought of it before, but those two would make a good double-feature.

Even better is Omega Man - Heston at his cheesiest, hokiest, shlockiest super-earnest best.

And then there’s Meteor starring Sean Connery, Natalie Wood and an ALL STAR Cast!

For a genuinely good, disturbing 70s armaggeddon flick, check out THX-1138 - It’s really more of an Orwellian, dystopian future movie - but does sort of imply the slow, gradual strangling of human civilization.

I think one of the more enjoyable of the grim future movies of the 70s was Invasion of the Body Snatchers

The Towering Inferno with Steve McQueen, Earthquake.

Crack in the World.” It’s what the SyFy Network would have made if they were making movies back in the 60’s. Great cheesy schlock.

Okay, some of these I’ve seen, and some are not available from Netflix, but I am putting a lot of cool stuff on my queue. Thanks, and keep it coming!

hee. ***so ***true about skiffy. i sat through *‘sharktopus’ *last night, god help me.
isn’t *‘crack’ *another of the ‘all star cast’ major wastes of celluloid so popular in the 70s? not that it doesn’t have it’s enjoyable popcorn (emphasis on corn) moments, you understand…

God help us both, then. My wife and I had an enjoyable time coming up with other ScyFy combinations…

Llamasaur
TigerSpider
Wormrats!

I have one but cannot remember, for the life of me, the title. Maybe you dopers can help.

A group of men are on a giant ship somewhere around saturn. On the ship there are giant
biodomes filled with plant and animal life. Something happens back on earth and they are told to jettison all the biodomes. Dont want to go any further as not to spoil.

Really cheesy movie but fun. Loved the robots. Would love to watch again.
Any clue guys?

Oh, Bruce Dern and Huey, Louie and Dewey - Silent Running. Yeah, seen that.

The first time I saw it on a black & white TV when I was a kid and I was crying by the end. I wanted to go out and plant all the trees that I could.

There’s A Boy and His Dog, an armageddon movie that stars Don Johnson.
