**KeithT **and I are moving to the Twin Cities area soon (in case you’ve missed all my other threads on this topic). Now we’re at the point of needing a local bank. We both prefer credit unions, but I don’t see any conveniently located in Eden Prairie, where we’ll be living. If you know of any of those, please let me know. Otherwise, please recommend a bank in the area. I like the fact that TCF is open 7 days a week. Can anyone tell me how their service is? Any other useful info/recommendations? Thanks!
TCF used to be a pain in the rear, but the service has gotten better. No service problems these days. The only problem - there are some retail establishments that will not accept TCF checks - I think because TCF will start out your account at whatever check number you want. Those same establishments don’t have any problems taking my check-card, though…
Sorry I don’t know much about credit unions around there. Other banks that cover the whole area would be Wells Fargo, USBank, M&I. Did you check to see if there is a Hennepin County Credit Union?
I’ve been with General Mills Federal Credit Union for about 7 years now. (I’ve got family in the company). They’ve been wonderful but this is probably useless for you. But, in those 7 years, I’ve been to the bank once and that was because I was in downtown Minneapolis and I could take cash directly out of my account without using an ATM. I thought it was novel to go to a bank.
You really can’t swing a dead cat around here without seeing a Wells Fargo ATM (they’re at almost all of the SuperAmerica gas stations which are prolific in and of themselves). As for their banking in general, well I know a lot of people that bank there but they’re also the same ones who work there too.
For a local bank I’ve heard good stuff about, go for Anchor. Supposed to be friendly and small and they have a bank in Eden Prairie too.
I dunno, I don’t do a lot of personal banking where I need to do anything offline as it were. In fact, I’ve been thinking of switching over to USAA which don’t even have an office here since their banking set-up seems to fit me much better (they reimburse ATM withdrawal fees up to $20 a month.)
Thanks Fetchund and stpauler.
You gotta admit, taxi, that this move is certainly (inadvertently) increasing your post count!
 I’m not doing it intentionally! Really!!
Hey, it is giving me an excuse to jump in, too - I may someday reach 100 posts, if taxi’s move gets delayed!!!
I did a search, in Yahoo’s “Yellow Pages”. Select Eden Prairie MN as your location, and “credit union” as your search. There are several listed in that corner of the Twin Cities. Sorry, but I don’t have any specific info about them.
“South Metro Federal CU” and, “City-County Federal CU” sound promising as far as being in the area, and possible letting you join based on where you will be living. They both also have multiple locations.
I’ve had a TCF account for about a decade now and like it. I rarely go inside or talk with people and usually withdraw and deposit using ATMs. The nice thing is the TCF ATMs are very prevalent in the Cities. My wife has an account with a Credit Union and has to rely on their opening hours which are less than TCF’s as well. She deals with it but occasionally asks me to get out funds when she runs low and can’t get to the bank conveniently.
Anyway, I’d recommend TCF. I have a basic checking account with no fees and got a home improvement loan thorough them (although that has been reassigned)
If Wells Fargo buys TCF, you will never want for a cash machine. I find Wells customer service abysmal. At least I did. I was driven away. Into the arms of USBank. I like my airline miles debit card from there. And their online banking is nice, although it took them a long time to get it working right. I’m pretty much a self sufficient banking customer, so I don’t need much.
