I really enjoyed Secretary with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Chuck and Buck was a good movie scripted by Mike White who recently did The Good Girl. That guy seems to be a talented writer imho.
The movie is a little wierd though.
I’d second Secretary. A strange off-kilter love story (or a kinky fairy tale for adults) with two lead characters who are a million miles away from the kind of characters who populate a typical Hollywood romance.
And I’ll add The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer as a meth addict/police informant with his own agenda. It’s a shame more people didn’t see this movie, Kilmer proves how good of an actor he can be, it’s a shame his career isn’t what it used to be. Vincent D’Onofrio is creepy and unrecognizable as a ruthless and deranged drug dealer.
I don’t know how well released it was, but there’s an excellent movie that none of my friends have ever heard of called Five Corners. It starred Tim Robbins and Jodie Foster and it was John Patrick Shanley’s first screenplay. His second is Moonstruck, which more people seem to have heard of.

I second Donnie Darko very cool movie, best Patrik Swayze role yet !
I however think the underappreciated Orgazmo about a Mormon becoming a porno actor is one of the best damned comedies I’ve ever seen. Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Southpark) made me laugh my ass off
