My family and I are in the process of researching a vacation to the Akumal/Tulum area the last week of June. We will be 5 adults, 6 kids ranging in age from 4-9, and are looking for accomodations recommendations. We are looking for a good place to stay that is not a hotel. We’d love to have our own little house or condo with a kitchen and 4-5 bedrooms. Do you have any recs?
Also, we are finding that the airfares are not going down much on a week-to-week basis. The travel sites I’ve been checking state that discount fares aren’t usually released until 60 days prior to travel. Do you think that’s true? Should we wait, or go ahead and book flights now?
Holy moly, I’ve never met anyone who has even heard of the place. I stayed there about 8 or 9 years ago in a private residence. That was a great experience, but I have no other real recomendations.
I would stay in Akumal over any other towns in that part of Mexico, but you must keep in mind that the place (Akumal) is absolutely tiny. I’ve heard it has grown a bit since I was there, but I don’t think it would be much larger. I seem to rememebr most places being quite nice, and quite reasonable.
I can’t imagine you’ll have a tough time finding a decent place to stay in a town that small.
We are wanting to see ruins, hang on the beach, go to Xcaret, stuff like that, and Akumal seems to be a good central jumping off point.
Although we would take recommendations for other places around there, if need be. We just don’t want to be in a hotel or in Cancun, but definitely close enough to do the above-noted activities.
We’ve stayed twice at the Hotel Club Akumal Caribe on the south part of the bay. The beach bunaglows are just a few steps from the beach and there are a number of restaurants at the hotel or more just a short walk up the street (north of the hotel). Its definelty more easy going than Cancun, and they have a lot of different activities to keep everyone entertained.
We have gone with a large group both times (30+ people) and generally get bungalows (2-6 people per). There is a great beach right there, and the location is pretty well centered between Tulum and Yal-Ku Lagoon (great snorkeling there).
Playa Del Carmen is near the Tulum/Akumal area, and I was just there at the beginning of March. We did stay in a hotel with a kitchenette, but had also looked at the Xaman-Ha condos there (the only reason we did not choose them was cost – we wanted to travel on the cheap).
While you’re in the area, consider checking out Xel-Ha – it was wonderful.
How is the area after last summer’s hurricane season? Is there anything we should be aware of?
Pstarr, checked out your recommendation, thought it looked familiar… turns out my sis already sent an inquiry and it’s booked. Too bad. That place looks cool!
Sent an inquiry off to your recommendation, Dangerosa. Hell, if it’s not available for my whole fam damily the week we want to go, I might just save my money and go by my damn self some other time. Had to logoff locogringo, though. Was getting too hyped up looking through all the cool stuff to focus on work!
I saw a site, Beadalin, that had a list of pros/cons to help a tourist decide whether to go to Xel-Ha or Xcaret. I’m thinking, what, you can’t do both???
