Recommend a tattoo artist in Atlanta area for reconstruction

I guess this qualifies for CS – it’s art, after all…

I got 2 awful tats on my back, about the size of my fist, that need covering.

Luckily, most of the color’s gone, but the blackwork looks like it was done with a medium-tip Sharpie. :frowning:

They were done by inexperienced hacks when I was a kid.

So I’m looking for a skilled tattoo artist in the Atlanta area with several years’ experience in reconstruction/cover work.

A caveat: Please, I ask y’all kindly, don’t post anything like “I know this guy and he’s young, but he’s really really good” or “I don’t know if she’s ever done any reconstruction work, but you might want to check her out”. If they don’t have a portfolio of recons/covers, I’m not going to go there, period.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I’ve not visited them, but I’ve heard good things about Psycho Tattoo on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

How far out of the area are you willing to travel? My artist is in the Carrollton area, and while I know for a fact that her partner has multiple years experience in original and reconstruction work, I believe she does as well. Either way, both of them are excellent and I would highly recommend them.

Hey, for really good ink, I’ll travel. Carrollton is less than 2 hrs away (I’m SW Atl). I don’t mind a couple/three weekend trips. I mean, it’s impractical to commute to Charleston, but if it’s going on my body, what’s a couple hours?

Hmmm… no offense, but… they spell their name “Psycho Tat2” (might as well throw in “Xtreme”), most of their Web search hits are for piercings, and you haven’t been there. I’ll take a pass. Sorry. Maybe they’re great, but I ain’t rolling the dice.

I recommend Mitchell at Junkman’s Daughter in Little Five Points.

Either Mitchell or his identical twin Watson put this on my back several years ago. I honestly don’t remember which one did the work, but they’re both very good.

(That image was obtained by literally lying down on a scanner, so don’t blame the tattooist for the quality. Also, it’s not really crooked as it appears to be there.)

Here’s a smaller, but otherwise better shot of it.

Fiver, something tells me that’s not cover work.

I don’t care how good an artist is, if they don’t have experience in reconstruction, I’m not looking them up. I’ve got blackwork like subway graffitti on my back.

And yes, I hold an artist accountable for the quality of their work, regardless of the circumstances.

I don’t mean to sound like an ass on this thread, but the OP specifically stated:

So I’ll take a pass on Junkman’s, too. Which is not intended as an insult to your ink or your artist’s skill.

Correct. I’ve not been there. Just heard about them, so you should take my suggestion with a grain of salt. I’m with you. If it’s going on my body, it had better look damned good.

Not that it helps, I got my work done nearly twenty years ago at Savage & Head’s in Raleigh. They did good reconstruction work on a fraternity brother of mine who got poison ivy on a new tattoo. After twenty years, mine still have nice, fine lines. Couldn’t speak about how well the color work holds up, since I’m partial to black and white work, myself.

Hey, if these guys are still working and have a good recon portfolio, I’m open to a little travel.

Amanda did my work (you can see both of them here), and Alan did BestKittyFriend’s reconstruction about a year ago (no pics, sadly, as I think he doesn’t trust me to not display them on the 'net, but trust me- Alan did a lovely job).

When I got mine at Timeless Tattoo, the portfolios we were looking through had a good amount of recontruction work in them which we were quite impressed by, although we didn’t need it. I’m not sure if it’s just one of their artists or what.

PS - you couldn’t drive to Charleston for a tattoo, it’s illegal.

Well now, you know you’re gonna have to explain that one.

Do you mean it’s illegal for artists in Charleston to tattoo out-of-towners or out-of-staters? Cause I’m pretty sure it’s legal for me to leave the state of Georgia and return with new ink.

Wait, never mind. :smack: Now I remember!

FYI, my antivirus detected a Trojan at your site there.

Wow, I had no idea there were so many other Atlanta Dopers I didn’t know!

By the way, bobkitty, it’s spelled “palatial.”

Maybe in your world, but in my world, where I have to make terrible sacrifices because the hint of intelligence brings out the villagers with their pitchforks, it’s spelled “palacial.” Do you want the villagers with their pitchforks to show up at my house, palatial or otherwise? Huh? DO YOU???

And now I’m wondering why one can’t drive to Charleston for a tattoo…

Oh good…I was, too.

You’d have to get an outlaw to do your ink!

Huh…I didn’t know that.
In the interest of fighting ignorance and all:

Should anyone be seeking this John Black of Lady Luck Tattoos, he or she might have an easier time of it looking in Ludowici, GA.

I agree with the main gist of this argument though. I wouldn’t want to get a tattoo at a place where there were no legal regulations. I would equate this with eating a restaurant that was not checked by the health department.
