You and me both! The competition for library jobs here is brutal, and the winters suck. Congrats on graduating. I myself am considering the Pacific Northwest. How’s the library job market out there?
I’m enjoying Tucson - I’m a librarian at the university and while it’s been a big adjustment from where I was before, the lack of snow or real cold in the winter made up for it.
I’m not sure what the library job situation is like - I’m still new enough that I don’t really know if there will be any openings at the university and I don’t know much about the Pima County Public in terms of jobs - http:/www.tppl.org is their website.
For you people scoffing at the midwest - it’s not that bad. Yes, it’s an adjustment, but I did almost 3 years in Youngstown at my first library job and I learned a heck of a lot at a smaller university. Ending up somewhere in the midwest doesn’t mean you have to stay there for the rest of your life.
The King County Library System has a good number of openings as show at this link. It serves all of King County except for the city of Seattle, which has its own [http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=about_jobsvolunteering excellent system. One of my sisters worked as a page, assistant librarian and bookmobile driver for about 7 years and another for about 12 years in an administrative position. By their accounts, the King County Library System is great to work for and the benefits are very good.
Another plus–there’s lots of Dopers in this area for you to meet.
