Sleater-Kinney’s “Little Babies” for an uptempo, rocking piece.
Thanks so much. This is the first time I’ve started a thread (constant lurker, occasional poster) and I’m overwhelmed by the variety and thoughtfulness of the responses so far. I’ve got a lot to track down because I haven’t heard of many of the songs before.
**
ArchiveGuy** - I hadn’t even thought about jazz songs, but what a great idea.
gigi - Good thing I hadn’t listened to “I’ll Love You Forever” in the early weeks after birth. *Everything *made me cry profusely then.
Kalhoun- It’s a bit hard to tell so far, but I’ll definitely keep that in mind when she’s a bit older.
**
Don’t Call Me Shirley** - Thanks for the neat tip. I can make the footage look aged in Muvee. Now if I can just get her walking. . .
“When You’re Smiling” (Fisher et. al.)and “Summertime” (Gershwin), perhaps?
Don McLean’s “Wonderful Baby” is a sweet, charming song.
Happy to help. In fact, the 3 songs I mentioned can all be found, in terrific arrangements, on this CD (the whole compilation is great).
Of course, another song you can use is the classic Schoolhouse Rock song *3 is a Magic Number*.
“Send Me On My Way” by Rusted Root. No, on second thought, I’m using this for my hypothetical future home movies involving my hypothetical future children. You can’t have it!
Funny, I just made a slideshow of my daughter for her grandmothers on Mother’s Day. (ProShow Gold rocks). Two of the three songs I used were mentioned. Allison Kraus - Baby Mine (from Dumbo); Somewhere Over The Rainbow/It’s a Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole and Bob Dylan’s Forever Young.
My next show will be more playful, and I plan to use Hakuna Matata, Who Let The Dogs Out, and Mahna Mahna (muppets) because she loves those songs. I’ll likely make use of Paul Simon’s Father & Daughter sometime too.
Depending on what you’re doing, you could do Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes and show pictures showcasing those parts. Or, you could show bath shots and use Rubber Duckie. Dance, Baby, Dance by Chris Phillips is an entire CD of up-tempo instrumental dance-y versions of kids songs. And there’s always Amy Grant’s Baby Baby if you can’t find anything else
Child of Mine by Carol King
You’ll Be in my Heart by Phil Collins
I like “The Way It’s Meant to Be” from The Features (album:Exhibit A) and heck, from the same album, “The Idea of Growing Old” might be worth checking out for the purpose.
“Magic Dance” by David Bowie, if you’re familiar with the movie Labyrinth. If you aren’t, you should go ahead and rent it just so you can use the song.
You remind me of the babe
What babe?
The babe with the power
What power?
The power of voodoo
Who do?
You do!
Do what?
You remind me of the babe!
Sleep Now by Peter Hammill.
Bonnie Raitt’s cover of Baby Mine
Goodnight Moon by Kim Wilbrough
Come Back To Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna Beauregard by John Prine
Strawberry Jam by Michelle Shocked
There are also some really beautiful “world music” lullabies out there. I borrowed a bunch from the library to burn CDs for my kids, so I don’t know any song titles, but the effect is gorgeous.
I so love “Kooks”, Winkelreid!
