Recommend Great Self-Released CDs by Independent Artists (No Record Contract)

At the risk of sounding like a total narcissist, I recommend my old band, Ersatz Glow (especially for fans of indie rock):

website
some songs

And my new band, Building Rockets:
website (pardon the dust)

And to distract from the fact that I am a total narcissist, here are some other bands from Gainesville, FL that are cool:

The Pawn Rook Four
website

Slings (formerly called mybandflare, before they moved to L.A.)
website

Swayze (my current favorite local band)
(don’t have a website – for shame!-- but here’s a little bio with an mp3)

D’oh, forgot to spell check my url.

Paul Sanchez - Hurricane Party

Cowboy Mouth - Uh Oh

Mary Prankster - Tell Your Friends

Technically, MP has a label. But it’s her corporation that she set up and it only releases her stuff.

Ain’t technology grand?

If you like girly acoustic folk-rock a la Jewel or Michelle Branch, check out Antares J.B., who has her own page at MP3.com:
http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/341/antares_jb_.html

You can listen to all her songs on that page in mp3 format, but no downloads… she has an album for sale and she needs to pay bills and eat! She is a personal friend of mine, and best of all, she’s a Straight Dope regular!

I don’t really have anything to add to the OP but, apropos of BBVL’s above post, I thought I’d mention that MP3.com’s entire archive will be destroyed on Dec 3!!. I think it’s a real loss to independent musicians and I hope Antares, and any other doper involved with MP3.com, will be able to make alternative hosting arrangements before the deadline.

I’ll take a chance to plug one of my favorite unheard artists:

Bob Martin has two albums available. He is a singer songwriter in the late 60’s early 70’s mode with an unusual vocal quality and a tremendous amount of impact and artistry.

He’s at his own label

Yup. It’s all true. MP3.com has sold out to CNET, the bastards.

Personally, my alternative hosting arrangements are over at soundclick.comhttp://www.soundclick.com/antaresjb/ – not all the songs are there that I had at mp3.com, but there are a few there that aren’t at mp3.com. Unfortunately, Soundclick doesn’t have a CD program, so no CDs for sale for now. But in the near future I intend to put together a bigger, better CD and sell it through cafepress.com, so stay tuned for that and in the meantime, you can all still listen to my stuff over at Soundclick and love me that way!

(and thanks bunched for the mention, Lou! Kisses, babe. )
