Next best independent site after MP3.com?

So what’s the latest and greatest site for Idependent music artists to upload their songs, and have people listen to them for free, or close to cheap? I used to enjoy going to MP3.com to check out some weird music, but they are no longer.

Well, for starters, there’s Epitonic. A fun site with lots of independent artist. It’s nicely organized and has a convenient playlist creator integrated right into the pages. I’ve been slowly working my way through their songs lately. There’s lots of good stuff here.

Then there’s Iuma. They offer a wide range of music if you have trouble finding something you like on Epitonic. If you like world beat or gospel (for example) then check here first.

If your interested in live music then go to the Further network. The site doesn’t have as much variety as others but I really like the concept behind them. Basically, they take the old ways of trading tapes with “a friend of a friend of a friend” and puts it online. I haven’t had a chance to try them fully but I like what I’ve seen so far.

Finally, if your into game music like me, check out Overclocked Remix. These are all songs from various video games that have been remixed by fans. I’ve downloaded all the Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy songs, but I’m just a obsessive fanboy when it comes to those game.

BTW, what happened to MP3.com? I stopped using them when I found out I had to disable my proxomitron to download music. I haven’t checked the site in many months.

Cool cool.SoundClick is another one I found.

I think MP3.com was bought out by CNET? Not sure though. I think the plan for MP3.com is to turn it into a pay per view music site, much like Napster is now.

Thanks for the links!

You might want to check out dmusic

Try Magnatune, a not-evil indie record label. If you decide to buy, 50% goes to the artists and you can choose what to pay. They’ve got some pretty good music, too, I’ve bought three albums from em so far.

When it first started garageband.com was a competition for independent artists to win a $250,000 record contract, but they lost a lot of money and now it’s just a showcase for independent artists.

another vote for Soundclick, here. That’s where I’ve got all my stuff. Used to be on MP3.com, but they did indeed sell to CNET. Not sure what their plans are for it. Soundclick is easy to use and you don’t have to register to listen like you did with mp3.com. I like it there.

I use www.ampcast.com for hosting my music, finding music and listening to their live radio streams (the DJ’s are funny).

Of course I’m bias because I’m a DJ there.

Wasn’t mp3.com owned by Vivendi?

Yup. But it lost them a ton of cash so they dumped it.

My local rag, the Washington Post, has a local mp3 library where you can download songs for free. Of course, many of the bands are shite, but DC has a pretty good indie rock scene and some gems can be found. Of course, my band is one of them… My sig has a link to my band’s page, and you can get from there to the other bands/songs.

I reckon many other big city papers might do the same thing.
