Recommend me a book

Yes I know this has been done before, but I figure some people have also read some books since the last thread so their opinions might change. I am a fan of mysteries, books about war, I love Dante and Grisham, and I also like comedy. Any recomendations?

Comedy? Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Most Discworld books. Good Omens.

Since you like mysteries:

Raymond Chandler: Farewell My Lovely (my favorite), The Long Goodbye, The Big Sleep

Dashiell Hammett: The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man

If you like mysteries and Dante, you might really enjoy The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl.

The best war novel I’ve ever read, bar none, was Micheal Shaara’s The Killer Angels.

The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie (of Fry and Laurie fame). A bit of a spy/action thing which, while not overtly comic, is definitely told tongue-in-cheek.

Sort of in the war genre - The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. Actually, anything by Tim O’Brien.

Mysteries - Dennis Lehane, Shutter Island and/or Mystic River. I enjoyed the movie after reading the book Mystic River, I think the reverse would also apply.

Mystery and comedy of various genres;

Carl Hiaasen, extremely funny crazy florida novels.

George(?) Macdonald Fraser: Flashman series, Victorian swashbuckling-asshole comedy.

Elizabeth Peters: Amelia Peters, egyptian 19th century archeologist, mystery romance comedy.

Robert Ludlum: usually serious mystery, but the Gandalfo series (2 or 3 books) are really funny.

Let me know if you like them

Comedy eh? Well, if you don’t find Catch-22 to be both impactful and funny as hell then… Then your opinion is drastically different from mine.

Try “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt. Its about a group of elite students, Greek scholars. There is a secret and a mystery and some weird stuff going on. I really enjoyed it and didn’t want to put it down.

Since you like comedy and mystery have you tried Eric Garcia? (of Matchstick Men fame)

Casual Rex, Anonymous Rex and the third Hot and Sweaty Rex are fun fluffy reads that you can devour in an evening. Unique characters. G

If you like books about war, then you must read W.E.B. Griffith He has two series of books The Brotherhood of War (about the US Army 1945-1970’s) And The Corps (about the US Marine Corps 1940-Korea so far) These damn books are adictive.

For war, Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series.

The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters is excellent. Very funny, very engaging.

For humorous comedy, check out Gregory McDonald’s Fletch and Flynn serieseseses…er…books. Also, Douglas Adams’ Dirk Gently books.

smacks forehead Humorous mysteries, that is.

Harriet the Spry- I have read Mystic River but have not seen the movie. I only hope it can measure up. Great book
Earl of CC-Catch 22 was great. I read it last year and it is one of my favorites.
