Recommend Me A Cooking Website ... Please?

So, I recently moved into my own apartment (with my girlfriend) and find myself doing the majority of the cooking. This isn’t a problem, because I do have a decent idea of how to cook … but I find myself missing or just unsure of some basic information.

For instance, I was pretty sure that potatoes should be baked at 425 for 45 minutes (and they came out splendidly, I must say), but I wasn’t positive. And I defrosted some chicken and put that in at 350 for 30 minutes … and then changed to that to 400 for another 10 minutes and it was pretty nearly done.

I don’t have the time or money to take a cooking class and cooking shows aren’t really appropriate. I’m looking for some sort of resource with basic cooking information that I can turn to when necessary (and those long distance phone calls to Mom add up pretty fast). Can anybody recommend any sort of web page (or perhaps cheap cooking book) like this? Thanks!

This site is fantastic:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/ (all the quantities are in metric, but the ON part of your location makes me think you’ll be familiar with these).

US-based http://www.epicurious.com is also very good.

Oh, and look under “Delia Smith” on the BBC site for basic cooking tips.

Well, darn. jjimm beat me to the epicurious.com suggestion. For a basic reference cookbook, I recommend Joy of Cooking.

For meat get a meat thermometer from the store. Lets you know when the meat is ready.

Stephen I have a Better Homes & Gardens cookbook that contains a lot of the basic information you’re looking for – how long to cook baked potatoes, how many minutes per pound of turkey. Plus a lot of simple recipes. Here’s what it looks like plus a link to Amazon if you want to buy it. From the same site, you may want to peruse cooking basics and index to FAQs. Good luck!

My personal fave is www.allrecipes.com.

Good stuff.

My favorite kitchen reference is The Food Lover’s Tiptionary. Great basic stuff, all in alphabetical order.

When I was checking Amazon for the link, I noticed a new version was published last month.

allrecipes.com is indeed the best.
