This is the next kitchen tool I want, and the wife says she’ll get me one for my birthday. So, which one is best? I am paranoid about slicing my fingers off, so one with a large grip food holder is essential if I want to use it without an oyster glove. Anybody have one they love?
I have this mondoline, a Bron. It works wonderfully, so much better than the cheapies I’d had before. Although I will have to admit I got mine for $5 at the Salvation Army.

Why do people like these things? My dad had one and I couldn’t figure out why people would use them.

not so expensive
I haven’t used either of these, in fact I haven’t used one yet.
I have the “expensive” one, and hate it with a flaming purple passion. Only OXO product I have ever not adored. The gripper thingy is too small for my hand, the cutting edges are barely sharp enough to scratch an unprotected finger, and the force needed to shove a mushroom through the slicer makes the damn thing fly off the counter. My hand-me-down 30-year-old Ronco slicer-dicer-julienne fryer works better.
It does store neatly and compactly, as advertised.
I have an expensive one and though it works well I don’t often get it out. Asian food stores sell plastic ones that work well and you will probably use it more often.
What MadPansy64 said. I have a kitchen full of OXO products, and this is the first one I’ve been disappointed with. It would work OK if it were sharper, but that’s a big “if”, and there’s no good way to sharpen it.
The dial that controls width on mine failed, so it only works in the widest setting, making it basically useless. I’m trying to return it for a warranty replacement–ideally, a replacement with other products.
They’re absolutely amazing for making homemade potato chips.
I had a $20 mostly-plastic one that I liked just fine, but I kept the blade razor-sharp. I’d do it again before I would shell out $150 for a truly great one.
By the way, they are indispensible for making uniform slices, like my world-famous pickled beets.
