Twister?
I’ll get me coat.
Twister?
I’ll get me coat.
If you ask me, Deathtrap with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve handled massive plot twists better than any other movie.
Miracle Mile.
I guess the obvious advice is to look to movies about con artists. One of my favorite con movies, full of all kinds of fun twists, is the Argentinian Nine Queens. Tons of fun, and smarter than most other con artist flicks I’ve seen.
Otherwise, don’t forget Hitchcock. I like to say that Dial M for Murder, my favorite Hitchcock movie, has enough plot for four regular movies.

I would like to point out for the nth time that The Sixth Sense had no plot twist. If you think there was one, you were not paying attention. Sleeping thru most of a movie and then going “whu, huh, I don’t see how that happened” does not qualify as a plot twist.
You’re right, it had a surprise ending.
Is it your opinion that anyone who did not guess the “secret” of the movie before it was definitively revealed is stupid?
Psycho, sure. Mulholland Drive…I’m still not entirely sure what the plot was. I liked it, but that doesn’t change the fact I’m still not sure what the movie was about.
The Harry Potter movies, but I reccomend reading them instead of watching.
Totally unrelated: How cute is this thing → Aww…
I hate to be the party pooper but the BEST PART about a movie with a twist is that you have no idea there is a twist in it. I hate it when people say this, “Dude, you have to see ________. It has an awesome twist.” Arrgh…it ruins it…then I just spend the whole time trying to figure out what the twist is instead of just watching and letting the story be told.
But since you asked:
“Dead and Buried”
ftg thank you. I feel exactly the same way. And, unfortunately, it has to do with what summerjack said - all the reviews said “what a great twist.” Well, I’m sorry, but the very first thing I thought of when reading the reviews was exactly what happened! I sat through the whole movie going “please, please, give me a twist that isn’t so blatantly obvious. Give me something that is different.” But it didn’t happen. And it was so disappointing. And it stuns me that so many people were surprised by this most basic plot twist. Think about it…you know the general scope of the movie, you know there’s a twist…what the hell else could it have been???
This is not to say that I’m supersmart, or other twists don’t get me (like Usual Suspects, which I’m sure other people thought were obvious). It’s just that The Sixth Sense gets WAY too much credit in the twist category.
But to each his own…if you enjoyed the movie, that’s all that counts.
Some other twist endings… provided you have lived in a cave all your life:
Two words. Twelve fucking monkeys.
Er… Two… Nevermind. I was told that the movie had a twist, but it still took me utterly and completely by surprise.
A case could be made for many of Mel Brooks’ movies. I mean look where in Blazing Saddles where they break off the western set and go running out onto modern-day Hollywood. Or in Young Frankenstein where Madaline Kahn’s character ends up extremely close to the monster.
On a more serious note I might suggest:
"Z" from the early 70s - truly fascinating film with a totally unexpected turn.
Charade- Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and a couple of nice twists of plot.
The Stuntman - With Peter O’Toole has an incridble amount of twists.
The Sting - Newman and Redford, it holds a couple of nice twists.
The Magus - If I remember correctly Anthony Quinn was in this.
Topkapi - A 70s Peter Ustinov film has some unexpected twists.
The original Ocean’s 11 had one.
TV
Suicide Kings has a GREAT twist ending, and is otherwise a fantastically fun film to watch anyway.
Wild Things had about ten too many “twists” in it, that it just got ridiculous. I don’t recommend seeing it because it’s a huge piece of crap, but I just wanted to point out that sometimes, huge plot twists are bad things for movies.
Memento has two great twists in it, one of which is just fucking cruel and amazing.
The Last Seduction has an interesting ending as well.
Some anime have some great twists.
Take Big O for example. Late in the first year, we learn of not one, but two twists.
How about The Game, starring Michael Douglas?
Also, you mind find you enjoy Unbreakable with Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson.
Or maybe there are some people who intentionally try to avoid “guessing” twists, intentionally take everything on screen at face value while still paying attention, because we like the feeling you get when something like that is revealed.
And despite my doing this, I still guessed The Usual Suspects well before the end of the movie. But I don’t think people who didn’t were sleeping through it.
Very true very true, if you ever get a chance to see it as a stage show, {I say go for it. Ive seen it twice in small theaters and it was well worth it both times, even if the acting isnt superb, the writing more than makes up for it.
I can’t believe no one’s mentioned Citizen Kane yet! It had that whole “Rosebud” thing going on.
