I’ll be in San Francisco for a few days. Show this New Englander the true meaning of Left Coast seafood.
Good breakfast/brunch places needed too!

Near Montgomery Bart. The Garden Court or Maxfield’s, both at The Palace Hotel at New Montgomery and Market. Food is very good and the atmosphere is fantastic. Check out the original Maxfield Parish painting over the bar at Maxfields. President Harding died at The Palace.
I cannot recall the name, but there is a bbq/ribs/steak place that is near the wharf - if memory serves, it is walking distance between where the tram drops you off and the wharf itself.
I make it a point to go there anytime I’m in the area.
OK, I know where I’m getting a crab omelette!
The Pub at Ghirardelli Square?
Scoma’s is the old-world seafood place just west of Fishermans Wharf. They’ve never impressed me - the food isn’t bad, mind you, but it’s never been *fantastic *on the handful of times I’ve been there with others.
I think half of their high prices go toward the view.
Since this is all about food and not just travel, I’m going to serve it up in Cafe Society. From IMHO.
nope - it was/is a standalone building - I can’t seem to find it doing a quick google, I remember when we found it around 1990 - been there a long time - but I have not been back to the bay area in a number of years, so it could very well be gone.
I had a good meal at Franciscan Crab restaurant a couple weeks ago. It’s at pier 43 1/2.
Alioto’s - It may or may not be on the menu, but ask for it anyway…
Marinated Crab.
You should order the half, in order to save room for dessert, but you’ll wish you ordered the whole.
Franciscan Crab looks great. I was looking at Alioto’s a little while ago. That looks really good too.
It looks like I won’t be suffering from a crab deficiency.
Don’t go to either of those places. Get off at Embarcadero BART instead and walk to the Ferry Building. Go to either Ferry Plaza Seafood or San Francisco Fish Company.
And wear long trousers and bring a jacket. Despite being in California and having palm trees, it actually gets chilly here.
Oh yeah, I have three different jackets packed already.
Tonnes of great food at the Ferry Building. Some decent foodie shopping, too.
It’s been a long time since I was there, but I remember Castagnola’s as being good a few years ago.
All of those places look great. And they all have crabs. Me --> Heaven.
My hotel is right on the southern border of Chinatown. Anything good there?
If you are in the Ferry Building, eat at Hog Island Oyster Company. The clam chowder is unlike the New England style stuff they sell at the other end of the Embarcadero, and so much better. And the oysters will change your opinion of oysters permanently.
