How about Stolen Summer? I didn’t expect that ending, anyway…
Lulu on The Bridge has an interesting twist.

Heh… randwill made the same point. I hear ya, because my favorite type of “surprise” movie is one in which the very existence of a surprise is unknown to the viewer until the twist is revealed… or at least it would be if there were no buzz about the movie. But hey, how often does one see a movie without having heard anything at all about it? You’d basically have to walk into the video store and pull a random title you’d never heard of off the shelf. I mean, there was a TON of buzz about The Sixth Sense, but I wouldn’t say going into it knowing there was going to be a surprise ending (but not knowing what it was) spoiled it for me. After all, I wasn’t smart enough to see it coming.
Deathtrap I actually saw on stage without knowing a movie had been made out of it. It would be interesting to see Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve in those roles, though.
I enjoyed Sneakers, The Shawshank Redemption, and
I had Fight Club slightly spoiled for me. The surprise still comes, echoing in your brain like an eons-long stampede.
Darn, I wasn’t done.
I enjoyed Sneakers, The Shawshank Redemption, and Signs, but they’re more what I would describe as films in which a certain revelation makes what you’ve been seeing so far make more sense, or makes everything seem to come together, not so much as films in which a twist which cuts to the very core of the plot comes out of left field.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I’m writing all this down.
Versus is a cheerfully absurd violent horror-comedy with undead, samurai, Yakuza, and combinations thereof–a la the Evil Dead films only with wacky Japanese gangsters instead of The Bruce. But the epilogue scene adds a surprising amount of subtext to quite a few exchanges that happened before it.
Body Heat is full of twists right to the end. Great script.
CARRIE
I still havent gotten over that “surprise” part and probably NEVER will…
I’d have to say The Boondock Saints, which didn’t really have a surprise ending so much as a rather dramatic reveal just before the ending. It brought tears to my eyes. Anyone who has seen the movie should know what I’m talking about.
If you can find a copy, ther’s a 1976 film called From Noon Till Three starring Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland that starts out like a conventional western, then takes several strange turns.
I’d suggest Angel Heart, but I may have spoiled it on another thread.
One film seems quite ordinary, with the exception of the excellent performances all the way through, until the very end – which has the most amazing and puzzling ending I’ve ever seen in one brief scene. Places in the Heart (with Sally Field, Danny Glover, Ed Harris, Lindsay Crouse, Amy Madigan)
These four films have absolutely shocking plot twists in them and are among my favorite:
High Crimes, starring Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman;
Along Came a Spider, starring Monica Potter and Morgan Freeman.
Double Jeopardy, starring Ashley Judd
The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins & Morgan Freeman.
Basically you can bet than anything with Morgan Freeman is generally outstanding…
I rented a good one yesterday.
Chaos (Hideo Nakata)
It’s a Japanese movie with subtitles, but the dialogue isn’t hard to follow.
I would add Arlington Road and Memento, without saying why so not to spoil anything for you.
The Game might qualify. I enjoyed it very much, anyway. After you’ve seen it, you might want to check out the alternative ending, listed on IMDB.
While I echo your thoughts on Denise Richards, how could you not mention Neve Campbell?!
P.S. The David Mamet film I referred to earlier is ‘House of Games’, not House of Cards. (There is a magician who specialises in card tricks in the cast - maybe that threw me…)
glee: I thought you were refering to that excellent television series about Francis Urquhart: it did have sort of a twist at the end.
FisherQueen- you got my first pick.
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE ends on quite the surprise note.
Mulholland Dr. of course.
I highly recommend <b>Diggstown</b> and <b>Dead Again</b>.
