I need gloves to do dishes, otherwise my skin gets too dry and cracks. But I’m getting pretty annoyed with using a pair of grocery store gloves for a few weeks, then the right one getting a tiny hole, rendering the pair useless. (It’s always the right one, so I can’t mix & match pairs.)
I would be perfectly willing to pay more for a pair of gloves that last for months, not weeks. But the fancy pair I bought at Target a few weeks ago . . . has a hole now. So I’m wondering if anyone knows of a good brand that’s worth an investment.
I don’t do a lot of dishwashing (most of them go in the machine), but for general cleaning chores around the house I just buy a pack (of 50) of the thin latex gloves and dispose of them after each use.
We keep a box of latex gloves under the sink. No problems with holes, they’re disposable anyway, and though I don’t use any kind of gloves much, I prefer them to thicker rubbermaid type gloves: you can feel what you’re touching, so to speak. If you’re allergic to latex, you can also get vinyl ones.
The problem I have with disposable gloves and washing is that typically the length is very short. You end up with water inside the gloves very quickly, which is what is trying to be avoided.
Oh, and for dirty tasks that just need a pair of disposable gloves, I prefer vinyl over latex. No stinky latex smell lingering on your hands, and they’re easier to get on/off.
I am really bummed that Williams Sonoma doesn’t have them on their website, but in their stores they sell these AMAZING rubber gloves for about $16.00 which last forever.
Well, the last pair I bought lasted 4 years, until I accidentally nicked one of the finger tips with a razor blade.
FOUR YEARS! And they come in yellow, pink, green, or purple.
Thanks guys - some good advice, and if the W/S or Mr. Clean ones don’t work out, I can pull out the big guns and get the brewing gloves!
BTW, Ferret Herder hit the nail on the head regarding disposable gloves. I have some that I use when I’m making meatloaf and whatnot, if there’s a chance I’ll have to answer the phone or intervene with the toddler, and washing my hands would take too long. But they’re just too short to work well for dishes - I wind up with gloves full of water.
I used to use Bluettes, which are heavier duty than regular gloves, but you can still feel what you’re doing. Available mostly in hardware stores, I think. Also, apparently, online.
