Recommend me some James Baldwin?

I’ve read Another Country, and found the prose at times truly beautiful. But it was a bit of a mess, plotwise.

I’m open to nonfiction and fiction recommendations alike, and read the first few pages of The Devil Finds Work in a bookshop, and liked it. Worth it? (I’m not a massive old film buff.) Or maybe Go Tell It To the Mountain, or Giovanni’s Room?

I liked that one, I also enjoyed If Beale Street Could Talk. It’s been a while so I don’t remember specifically what I liked about each, I think Beale Street was the better read though, IIRC.

I took a Baldwin course in graduate school, and I found him to be an engaging writer of both fiction and essays. FWIW, there are 2 anthologies on him, one of essays, one of fiction/novels, that are pretty cheap and worth buying. His essays are arguably ‘better’ than his fiction, but I found both “Go Tell It…” and “Giovanni’s Room” engaging.

Sadly, I’d never even heard of Baldwin until that course. One of the most under-rated authors of the 20th century, IMHO.

Yeah-I’m surprised at the lack of replies! Think I will order Go Tell It…, thanks guys.
