Recommend me some music

Hey, I’ve been getting into this Itunes all the kids are talking about. And I’m looking for some new music to try.

My favorite musicians by far are Tom Waits and John Prine, so it’s a given I have both their entire catalogues. I also was really into Lou Reed and Velvet Underground back in the day, but either Lou or I have moved on in the past few years.

Other music I like includes blues (delta) and some acoustic jazz. For rocking out I like the Clash, Ramones, and Stones (pre sell-out days) and such. Throw in some Janis Joplin and a bottle of bourbon and I’m pretty much good to go.

Anyway, I have this bad habit of re-reading the same novels over and over and listening to the same music again and again. Help me break my rut.

Because of my location, the music has to be something I can get online.

This is a different mix of what you’ve noted above, but Mc Frontalot is great fun (this coming from someone who likes most of what you’ve mentioned).

It’s indie rap/hiphop worth hearing. He’s got a good handle on putting his phrases together and the subject matter is not your average rap crap.

He has a bunch for free on-line. I’d reccomend starting with Goth Girls, Which Mc was That, Indier than thou, Yellow Lasers, and Message no. 419.

In fact, just today I was listening to Message No. 419 and thought of how much it reminded me of early Waits in the phasing and touch of Message No. 419 .

Well I own some of everyone (including Jack and Jim and any other bourbon makers) you mention except Prine and my next obsession is Gillian Welch who I saw on a country music documentary. It is like a modern dark version of old, old country music. And every Clash fan should have Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros Streetcore, one of the most under appreciated albums of all time.

I’ve used Pandora to find new music. Put in someone you like and they will play what they think is similar music. You can customize by rejecting anything you don’t like. It keeps me busy for hours!

Tom Waits is my favorite musician too (and I love me some Maker’s Mark bourbon), so allow me to recommend:

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (super-dark; you can’t go wrong with anything off their *Best of * album or Murder Ballads)
The Pogues (hard-drinking Irish rogues who blended traditional Irish music and instruments with punk rock, and a favorite of Mr. Waits; start with their Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash album)
Neko Case (the entire Blacklisted album is where I tell everyone to start, so they fall in love with her)
Josh Lederman y Los Diablos (I know you can hear samples and order their CDs on http://www.cdbaby.com , but also check Amazon for this Waitsian bar band)
Mr. Bungle (one of Mike Patton’s many projects; their album California runs the gamut through countless musical genres, and sticks them all in a blender)
The Dresden Dolls (often called “cabaret punk,” they have a sexy girl singer/pianist and a drummer, and I’ve described their music as “Imagine Tori Amos locked in an insane asylum with a piano in her padded cell, wearing a vintage corset and ripped black fishnet stockings, playing all the madness in her head as she imagines herself as the main attraction on stage at a smoky nightclub in pre-World War II Germany.”)

I’ll second The Pogues. Waits even did some liner notes for the re-releases of their albums that came out in '04. Don’t know how much of their stuff is available on iTunes, though (I do know Shane MacGowan& The Popes’s The Snake is available there - MacGOwan was the singer/songwriter for The Pogues, and the album is very good).
