Recommend me some mysteries!

I give you this, out of the goodness of my heart. Some day, perhaps, I will need a thing from you.
Also,

Christopher Fowler’s Bryant and May series are quite, quite excellent.

I already weighed in in that thread, so I’ll just stand by what I posted there. Enjoy your reading!

*The Murder of Roger Akcroyd, The ABC Murders *and especially *Death on the Nile *by Agatha Christie
*Calamity Town, The Greek Coffin Mystery, Cat of Many Tails and the Player on the Other Side *by Ellery Queen
*Trent’s Last Case *by E.C. Benton
the Sharyn McCone series by Marcia Muller
anything by Raymond Chandler
anything by Dashiell Hammett
Kate Wilhelm’s Barbara Holloway books, haven’t read a mediocre one yet
anything by T. Jefferson Park, excluding the dreadful California Girl
*An Unsuitable Job for a Woman *by P.D. James. Really, all of her books are good and at least half are exceptional
Cynthia Harrod-Eagle’s Slider series has several good mysteries
*Help the Poor Struggler *and *The Old Silent *by Martha Grimes. I would avoid any of Grimes’ books after The Old Silent

Ooooh, I forgot about those - I strongly second this suggestion!

Ooooh shiny!

Thanks everyone I’m enjoying looking through the recommendations!

I wanted to add that if you liked Charlaine Harris, do try her ‘Shakespeare’ mysteries, all set in Shakespeare, AR or my personal fav, her Harper Connelly series, Harper was struck by lightning when she was a teenager and can now sense a corpse, in a grave or not, and also knows how that person died, but it’s better than how I make it sound.

Another source for free e-books: the blog Books on the Knob reports on free and bargain books available (sometimes for a limited time) for the Kindle, Nook, and/or other readers. For example, today they’ve got a link to a mystery called Bake Sale Murder that Amazon is offering free for the Kindle.

I heartily recommend Foul Matter. It it is not in the Richard Jury series and is utterly hilarious.

A bit eccentric, but I have to recommend the Flavia de Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley. Flavia is a 10 year old British girl in 1950’s who loves chemistry and solving mysteries. There are only two of them so far, but both have been great reading and definitely not your normal mysteries.

Yeah I’ve read all of those already

Dead Famous by Ben Elton

Have you considered Kim Harrison if you like the supernatural aspect? I know some have complained they are too smutty, so there is that. Hollows Series
The other ones I really grab are the Hard Case Crime, they are more noir than graphic and all over the map in type of writing.
If you prefer death off screen with a bit of supernatural there’s always Aunt Dimity, very sweet, not scary.
Do you like out of doors? How about a geologist? Sarah Andrews
Dino mysteries? Eric Garcia

Toni L.P. Kelner has two series of mysteries out. Her Laura Fleming novels are about a Southern gal who has moved to Boston and solves mysteries (Wed and Buried, Tight as a TRick, Death of a Damn Yankee) Toni is herself a Southern gal who has moved to Boston, so she gets her details right.

Her more recent novels are her Where are they Now? mysterie, about a writer who follows up on the whereabouts of former media stars and the mysteries she finds.

All written with considerable humor.

That sounds pretty crowded.

I just finished this and enjoyed it. It was a little slow moving, however I read mostly to fall asleep, so that was actually okay.
