Nonsense. Tragedic Italian (and German) operas are about puppy love and getting mildly miffed.
A typical plot is this: Boy meets girl. Boy develops mild crush on girl. Another boy does something naughty. Boy and girl get mildly miffed, but get over it really fast. Then they get married and live happily ever after.
OP, one good way to get into opera is to do a little self analysis about what makes things work for you, and what tends to ruin things.
Opera, like most kinds of performing art, exists on several sliding scales:
*the “escapism” scale
*the “tunefulness” scale
*the “looks convincing on stage scale”
*the “heavyweight drama” scale
(not bad for making it up as I go, I suppose…)
Are any of those things more/less important to you than others? If so, it will be easier to recommend things to you.
