Recommend reading on ancient houses

Having just returned from an exhibit that had scaled models of Essene dwellings at Qumran and a virtual tour of the Temple, I am curious about how people of the 1st Century lived- what their houses looked like (whether subsistence level or wealthy or in between). I have found a good bit of stuff on Roman homes (the insulae and the villas) but not so much about daily life in Israel, Alexandria and other parts of the empire. If you have read anything that was particularly helpful, please let me know.

Thanks

Sorry- forgot to ad (as the title should make clear), I am more interested in private houses than in public structures, palaces, etc…

I think it was National Geographic which brought out a book, 30 years ago or so, called something like Everyday Life in Ancient Lands. It may not be perfect, and it certainly won’t include the latest discoveries. But it’s probably an excellent starting point.

I don’t remember if that was the exact show title, but essentially it covered the various types of humans and near humans that have been on earth for the last several million years. Disappointingly, the show didn’t give the scientific names of the various species, so I don’t know how to look them up on the Internet.

One in particular, they called “Goliath”, apparently the largest hominid that ever lived, unless you consider Gigantopithecus a hominid, in which case that one wins it knuckles down.

Does anyone know who they meant by Goliath Man? Would it be H. Heidelbergensis? That species has been loosely referred to as a giant, but I never thought they were supposed to be that big.

Sorry about that, it was supposed to be a new post.

Can a mod help out?
