Now this is actually pretty funny
If he likes photography, try Astronomy Picture of the Day. Something new every day and an archive to search.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Flickr is exactly what I was looking for, and some other great ones suggestede here too. He isn’t familiar with computers or even how to search on Google yet, so the document I’ve made up for him has tips on avoiding scams, how to search for stuff etc. I think the only thing he’ll want to spend money on so far is Amazon, so I’ve told him about paying for stuff there, and not to enter his bank details into other sites.
Have included Youtube as well, and the Channel 4 free download service 4OD. The Onion and Google Groups should be great for him too. He really doesn’t go out much and is on lots of meds that make him a bit woozy, so the internet once he figures it out should be a great social thing for him.
I agree with just showing him Google and letting him find out stuff himself, but the thing is he really doesn’t know even how to surf yet, so I thought giving him some good sites to start off with will let him learn at his own pace. Some great suggestions here, thank you.
Be sure to check out Flickr groups. They are virtual "collections"of photos around a certain theme (dancing, nudes, nature, technology, cities, etc ect a thousandfold) or styles (Black and white, all kinds of photography).
A friend of mine is a professional photographer and she said she learned more about photography through Flickr groups then in her professional training. people discuss each others photo’s, give advice on technical and style stuff… it’s like an ongoing highly specialized on-line photography class.
A fun and interesting history site is History House. They have short amusing essays about ridiculous or ironic stories from history.
