Recommend some car care products.

I’m on the verge of getting a new vehicle and I’m looking good polishes and waxes and what not. The car is a 2003 Nissan and I don’t know if the paint is clear coat or not. The colour is canteen (grayish green).

Since I am also on the verge of buying a house, I am excited by the idea of being able to park in a garage and not needing to deal with the Texas environment 24/7.

Ideally, I would like to car to retain a ‘like new’ finish for as long as possible. I don’t mind spending an hour or two working at it on weekends.

So what sayeth the Dopers?

Go to www.griotsgarage.com. These are some of the best car care products on the market, and reasonably priced. Everything from car clay to polishes and waxes and tools galore.

Thanks, that stuff looks interesting, despite the fact that they are trying to sell a bucket for $40.00.

Have you ever used the detailing clay?

I stumbled across something called Eagle One Wheel & Tire Cleaner that does a great job of removing brake dust and road gunk from alloy wheels. It’s in a spray bottle, and since I don’t remember what it cost, I’m going to guess that it wasn’t very expensive.

I just used clay last weekend for the first time. My paint had a fair amount of contamination (brake dust, bug residue, etc), and the clay worked like a champ. I was amazed at how easily it removed the crud without harming the paint, as opposed to using a more conventional paint cleaner which would have removed some of the paint.

You probably won’t need a polish for a while if you are going to buy a new car. Wax should be just fine.

Don’t take it from me, though. Lot’s of good advice from here:

I usually use mothers brand polishes/waxes on my stang. Though alot of people HIGHLY recomend Zaino polishes. It is pricy and you can only buy it through an order form printed from www.zainobros.com but it does work wonders from what i’ve seen. they ahve just about everything you can think of for your paint.

Mothers and Meguiars(pronounced like McGuire) are really good stuff. Some better things are out there, but they get really expensive.

Yeah, their tools and things are a bit pricey, but very high quality. I use the car clay all the time. Rub your hand lightly across your paint, even on a new car, and you will probably feel a slightly gritty surface. Use car clay, sprayed with the Speed Shine, rub VERY lightly and grit is gone. You can do an entire car in about ten minutes. Then wax.

I’ve been asked if my stock paint job on my Honda CRV is a custom job, that’s how good Griot’s products work. You can get the basic kit which has Speed Shine, wax, car clay, wheel cleaner, rags, etc. for about $60.
