Oops - meant to comment on this as well. Firefly and BSG are a little apples in oranges other than being well-written sf. BSG is a lot more of an attempt at gritty drama, with very little in the way of the trademark Whedonesque banter, quirky humour ( excluding the occasional throwawy comment by loony Baltar ), or wild piratical adventure. The principal actors project gravitas more than cleverness.
Also the universe is much more military prosaic and seemingly closer to ours ( the Greek paganism notwithstanding ) and…ummm…less colorful ( in the sense of actual colors as well as cultural soup ).
