Recommend some obscure horror/thriller movies!

Public libraries frequently have fairly extensive video/DVD collections, so anything we’re suggesting that Netflix doesn’t have, the library might.

Like The Uninvited.

The original B&W looks-like-it-was-made-for-$1000 CARNIVAL OF SOULS

To each his own. I’ll get over it.

i agree with the original “carnival of souls”. not obscure, but the original “nosferatu” is cool. “between two worlds” is not really a horror film, but has an interesting premise, as does “on borrowed time”. “on borrowed time” is still not out on dvd, but you can imdb it to find out about it. my alltime favorite movie is “freaks”, but it’s not really horror either. don’t over look “the entity”, based on a true story.

Not terribly obscure, I suppose, but these have long been favorites of mine:

In the Line of Fire - Clint Eastwood plays an over-the-hill Secret Service agent squaring off against creepy wannabe assassin John Malkovich. Love it.

The Hidden - An alien criminal who can hide inside human bodies goes on a rampage across L.A. Bizarre but fun.

True Lies - Ah-nuld is an agent so secret even his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) doesn’t know what he does. Exciting and funny.

Dark City - Rufus Sewell realizes that it’s always nighttime in the unnamed city where he’s suspected of a murder he didn’t commit. Beautifully filmed and deeply affecting.

God Told Me To–Starts off creepy, then metamorphoses into full-blown mindf_ck.

The Korean movie ‘The Host’ that came out a few years ago is awesome. I don’t know if it counts as obscure, but it is great.

"The Orphanage (El Orfanato)" - Looking over the list of films you liked, I think this one will be *perfect *for you!

I recommend *Magic *staring a young Anthony Hopkins.

The Haunting of Hill House scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid, and I still refuse to watch it alone. This is the story written by Shirley Jackson, not the movie with Vinnie Price and skeletons. The original is waaay scarier than the remake with Katherine Zeta Jones, watch the old one.

Another really freaky movie is Betty Davis’ Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. Chilling.

Polanski’s REPULSION. Story of a young woman slowly losing her mind. Starring a young Catherine Deneuve. Wonderfully creepy.

I’m not sure how obscure it is, but if you want something truly macabre, I highly recommend Tod Browning’s 1932 classic, Freaks.

You might enjoy Series 7. It 's about reality television, except instead of voting someone else off the island on the show, you have to kill them. It’s fascinating.

Well, if you haven’t seen The Devil’s Backbone, then do so as soon as you can; It’s fantastic, creepy, chilling, thrilling, poignant, suspenseful… it’s got the lot. ANd a ghost that is FRIGHTENING, not scary. Scary kinda suggests a “BOO!!” jump outa nowhere, cheap shock type of ghost. The ghost in The Devil’s Backbone will Frighten you to look at it.
And my own semi-obscure recommendation is a superb little chiller called My Little Eye, about contestants on a web-based reality show. Its a nasty little movie with little by way of grue and gristle, but plenty in the way of cold, chilling horror.

And the Descent. Gotta love The Descent!

Dog Soldiers. British squaddies versus werewolves.

Two 70s TV movies that always creeped me out.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark with Kim Darby.

Devil Dog, the Hound from Hell with Richard Crenna.

Ravenous which is about a group of soldiers in 1840s California and cannibalism.

Marc

I second the recommendation of “A Stir of Echoes”

Nobody has mentioned “The Others”, but that too, was a good horror film.

Gotta check out Series 7, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, and Devil Dog…just about every other movie suggested since my last post, I’ve seen (and generally loved!). I did love The Orphanage and every recommendation so far has been pretty much spot on, if that’s any consolation. Repulsion was great, Freaks was…freaky, and I’ve even seen My Little Eye, which is perhaps the most obscure of the recommendations so far. Maybe I’m close to exhausting the possibilities with Netflix at this point.

I looked through the ‘watch instantly’ category for Netflix, horror really isn’t my genre but it sure looks like it’s mostly crap to me. The only ones that come to mind right now are:

The Serpent and the Rainbow
The Evil Dead
