A bit difficult to quantify my tastes, but…
I like quirky/ironic video and cartoons
I like percussion-centric music and peforming arts
I like good computer animation
My current collection includes The Blue Man Group, Music For One Apartment And Six Drummers, Stomp and Animusic.
Based on this very sketchy idea of what I like, can anyone suggest things I may not have seen yet? It needn’t be an exact match for the above, as I also want to broaden my horizons and challenge my existing tastes.
I just bought the Tap Dogs DVD based on reviews and a ‘people who bought x also bought y’ thing on Amazon.
Japanese taiko drummers such as Kodo Drummers or Yakudo? The experience of the live performances is amazing. [sub]Whoops, the performance is a TV piece, but you get the idea…[/sub]
BTW, I loved Stomp and saw them a couple of times. I also saw Tap Dogs and liked them too. I’ve seen the Blue Man Group on video and thought it looked interesting but would hope that the live impact would be greater than the video.
Past tours of Dead Can Dance also showcased an excellent percussion section, but it seems to be missing from their current incarnation.
Everything I’ve heard would seem to suggest this to be the case. I think the video (or significant parts of it) is quite stunning. The nearest Blue Man franchise to me is in Berlin
I should also mention that I’ve been fairly impressed with parts of the TV appearances of the Cirque Du Soleil, although more so the spectacular bits than the dance segments, that I think tend to go on for too long.
Also (fleshing out the general profile of my tastes); I like stage and screen musicals. A lot.
I second cantara’s recommendation: do whatever you can to see a Taiko show. They’re just stunning. Literally, at times – the first time I saw a taiko performance in Berkeley, they had over 100 drummers on stage from 3 different dojos in California, and it was enough to knock the wind out of you.
And as far as I know they’re no longer together & producing anything, but check out Emergency Broadcast Network. (That link is supposed to go to the All Music Guide entry; if it doesn’t work, just do a search on their name). Their schtick was using video samples instead of just audio; they got the most press from a U2 tour where they combined samples from George Bush the Elder’s state of the union address and remixed them into a cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”
That sounds interesting; I’m actually working on a project myself mixing video and audio samples from 1940/50s ‘kitchen of tomorrow’ type futuroptimist shorts over the top of a sort of trance beat.
Definitely gonna have to see some of this drumming. I wonder if there are any tours coming to the UK
