Listen to Quartz. It’s basically a smoked haddock chowder. It’s lovely!
Bumping once to see if anyone has any more suggestions?
I forget the name but in Stonehaven there is a restaurant right beside the harbour - on the right, not the one on the hoarding - which does very nice but plain food and is good for a cup of tea too.
If you’re east of Edinburgh, Steampunk Coffee in North Berwick is pretty good.
More than just coffee, although it’s a somewhat popular brand of coffee here, too.
If you like coffee, Edinburgh has more good coffee shops than most places…
Bumping-- I’ll be in Glasgow this summer too, so if there are more recs for that side of things…
Depending upon your budget, these are two favourites I found in Glasgow, but they’re both pretty pricey:
Tiffneys
- Nice steakhouse, in a bit of a funny location, feels like someone’s converted a flat into a restaurant, but the food is terrific, and the owner and waiters were great.
- The food here is simply fantastic. It’s pricey, but IMO well worth every penny.
At St Andrews, check out
Balgrove Larder
- The Larder itself is great for fresh produce and artisan goods, but there is a Steak Barn attached where we got a good steak lunch.
The trip is rapidly approaching. Any late recommendations?
I can recommend a restaurant called The Dogs in Edinburgh. Classic Scottish menu prepared simply and well. My husband and I found it a real treat.
If you’re anywhere near Loch Lomond - http://www.thedroversinn.co.uk/
WEST on the Green, Glasgow https://www.westbeer.com/ for German style food and beer, gorgeously done in beautiful surroundings.

If you do get to the Willow Tea Rooms in Glasgow, order the meringue dessert. It was the best thing we had on our whole trip to Britain. It was our 20th anniversary treat and we will remember it forever.
Also in Edinburgh: Mary’s Milk Bar. Get the hot chocolate.
Lairhillock inn just outside Aberdeen, great country pub, although its been a few years since I lived there.
Be aware that the drink drive laws in Scotland are extremely strict. You could probably fail the breathalyser just by breathing the atmosphere in some pubs!
Good point, we mostly went there for the excellent sunday carvery table.
I’m making the wife drive!
We had a very nice dinner at the Salisbury Arms (in Edinburgh) last night. We sometimes go there just for a drink, but we had been hill walking and were hungry!
If you want a restaurant meal it’s best to book, but the same menu is also available as bar food (which is what we did this time). The bar, especially, is a big light, airy room, with seating outside if it’s warm enough!
FYI It snowed on me on Saturday (16th April). Just worth mentioning
And there was hail too.
Yes, the Pentlands on Sunday had bitterly cold wind and rain/sleet at times. Not much fun when it was at it’s worst.
We are packing puffy coats!
