I’m looking to expand my musical library, and I thought that I’d ask the Teeming Millions for a little help.
I love acoustic guitar music, either solo (a la early Jewel), or with a band behind the singer. So it doesn’t HAVE to be a solo artist.
For instance, Wilco (and their stuff with Billy Bragg), The Counting Crows Storytellers, Allison Krause, Jimmy Buffett, Sheryl Crowe, etc are among what U generally listen to in this format.
So, come on, people…give me some recommendations!
Geez, the news about Persephone’s screwing with me worse than I though. Can I get a mod to please change the title to “Recommend SOME acoustic guitar music?”
And, in the OP, it should be “…what I generally listen to,” not “what U”
Lorna Vallings is a really high-quality indie artist that is sort of a hybrid between Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow. www.lornavallings.com, there are plenty of MP3 samples. Her second album is more like Dar Williams, her newest is more acoustic rock with a lot more band stuff behind it.
Oh, an Dar Williams would be in the right ball park too. www.darwilliams.com.
And Catie Cutris (particularly early Catie Curtis). Curtis’s music was used a LOT in the first season of the TV series Felicity. www.catiecurtis.com
Zut! I hit submit too soon!
The three I mentioned above often tour with minimal band support so you get great solo acoustic performances. If you really like the sound you’d probably want to start with earlier albums and work your way forward. Later albums have more production and more electric instruments.
Catie Curtis’s Truth from Lies and Lorna Vallings’s Taste and Horses.
Curtis’s album in particular if you like early Jewel.
You don’t say what genre you are interested in, but here are some talented folks:
Acoustic Alchemy
Paco De Lucia
Ottmar Liebert
Charlie Byrd
Chet Atkins
For a combination of acoustic and electric, try “Elegant Gypsy”, an album by Al Dimeola and Paco de Lucia.
You might want to check out Nick Drake. Folk singer from the 70’s. You might remember his song “Pink Moon” from the volvo commercial of the people riding in the convertible Cabriolet along the beach at night where they pull up to a party, then decide to keep driving.
He can be depressing, though. I find it hard to listen to a whole album straight through.
Have you heard Dan Fogelberg?
