It’s time for a new bed. The old one has had it. Problem is, I have no idea as to which bed to buy. All I know for sure is, it will be a queen size, and fairly stiff, as my wife has osteoarthritis. I’m looking to spend around $700 to $1000.
We got a “sleep number” bed. It didn’t make a big difference to me, but NoCoolSpouseName swears by it. If I tried to return it I’d be divorced, that’s how much. I don’t think a queen size is in the $1000 range, however.
My sister and her husband just purchased a bed from the Four Seasons. I don’t know exactly how they ordered it (it is new) or what they paid, but they absolutely love it. I would try to get a bed from any major hotel supplier, might be a bit more expensive, but certainly worth the comfort level.
Please don’t buy anything until you have gone to a store that carries Tempur-pedic foam mattresses and at least tried out one of these.
I had terrible problems with my back until we bought one. It is very firm and supportive but it also adapts to your body’s shape and temperature so it is also soft. I know that sounds contradictory.
It was developed by NASA and they are made in Sweden. I’ve checked out other foam mattresses and the foam isn’t as sturdy and, judging from the samples they sent, it deteriorates.
Yes, they are expensive. We had been sleeping in a king-sized bed and have had no trouble adapting to just a double size because movements from one side don’t disturb the other side of the bed. They do come in queen and king size, however.
My doctor had told me about these mattresses and I knew that I wanted one. We ordered ours over the internet! http://www.tempurpedic.com/home.asp
(They have one of those “if you don’t like it, send it back” agreements.) They carted off our old mattress.
I sleep better and don’t turn over as much and my back does just fine. It’s what I miss most about home when I go on vacation.
I’ve been surprised to find out at SDMB that not everyone likes them. They have been a great relief to my aching bones!
I just got a queen sized Simmons Beauty Rest, nothing fancy, just their basic Beauty Rest mattress. I think it cost about 750 bucks. But I spent a decent amount of money on a mattress pad, which I think makes a huge difference in how comfortable it is. If I’d had the extra cash, I’d have plunked down for a featherbed top (about 100 bucks at Target) for extra cushy-ness because I’m one of those weird people that loves a really firm bed with a really soft top - and pillow tops can run quite a bit more expensive.
At any rate, I love the bed, it’s the best I’ve ever slept in my life.
