Recommendations for Downloadable Anti-Virus That Doesn't Require ActiveX Capability?

The reason I’m asking is that somehow my Internet Explorer got hosed and will not display the Information Bar when it blocks an ActiveX from being installed.

I had a problem with my McAfee VirusScan and, on the advice of their tech support, uninstalled it. Now I can not reinstall it from their web site for the reason mentioned above.

I DO NOT want to have to struggle with MicroSoft tech support, would rather just change browsers. I am OK with having to purchase another antivirus package (my time is worth more than the small amount of money to purchase).

So, do any of you have recommendations for antivirus software that does NOT need to download an ActiveX program prior to being downloaded and installed?

(Note: I’m not mad at McAfee or anything, and it wasn’t their problem in the first place. In fact, I now have a sneaking suspicion that my initial difficulty in fact had to do with the IE problem.)

Thanks in advance.

I meant to add, that I am planning to use another browser rather than deal with MS tech support. And my understanding is only IE handles ActiveX, so that is why the antivirus software can’t require ActiveX.

F-protect.

How about AVG ?

McAfee is bad. Norton is worse. For some reason, people continue to pay money for this software. Really, it boggles the mind.

AVG Personal Edition is better than either of them. It’s as bloat-free as antivirus software gets. It won’t bog down your computer. It won’t mess up other programs. Best of all, it won’t cost you a penny.

Should you ever find that you need ActiveX for some other reason, reinstall Internet Explorer.

I spent three days at work trying to get ActiveX controls to work.
Just as I was about to give up I found a fix. You need to go to the windows folder on the drive windows is installed on (probably the C:\ drive) make sure you can view hidden folders, then delete the “downloaded program files” folder. It will recreate itself the next time IE is started. This should take care of any ActiveX issues you are having

I second AVG; I purchased it for all my company’s computers after finally losing faith in Norton and it’s working nothing short of beautifully. Have tried LOTS of different anti-virus solutions and nothing comes close to AVG.

I will third it. I have seen Norton sucking massive amounts of CPU time. It is a hog. AVG is fast, light, and free. The third item being a bonus.

Well, OK, then, looks like AVG has a lot of believers out here; I’ll give it a shot tonight!

And thanks for all the other tips as well. I really appreciate all of your help.

P.S. Also, thanks Qwisp, I may need that tip in the future.

Just a quick update and another thanks to all for the advice. I have installed AVG, it went smooth as silk, absolutely no problems, and I am on another browser as well.

Such a relief to be able to get on and stay on instead of quick hits fromt he hotel and from work.

THANK YOU!!!
