Humans (UK ch 4, US AMC) season 1 was pretty good. I’m not sure when season 2 will start. It’s a scifi show about human-looking androids who have become sentient and are being hunted by the police/government. Not just an ‘action’ show, more of an exploration of sentience, humanity, and ethics. William Hurt has a nice guest starring role.
More recently, Justified ended its run. An excellent series with a great cast, based on the works of Elmore Leonard.
Then there’s a current series called Longmire, about a present-day Sheriff in Wyoming, based on the books by Craig Johnson, which are a lot of fun.
Have you seen Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch? I enjoyed that show quite a bit.
Or watch the original British version, called Broadchurch. Essentially the same story, but without David Tennant having to fake an American accent. There are 2 seasons of the British version.
Second the Justified recommendation.
Also, I thought Dexter was great.
Many shows that I’d have suggested have been mentioned, so I’ll bring up one that hasn’t been.
Turn: Washington Spies on AMC:“Follows New York farmer, Abe Woodhull, who bands together with a group of childhood friends to form The Culper Ring, an unlikely group of spies who turn the tide in America’s fight for independence.”
It helps if you like history, drama and interpretations of famous people. George Washington for one and witnessing how Benedict Arnold went from a popular, patriotic celebrity into the most famous traitor in American history.
And it’s been renewed for a third season.
I’ll second The Fall and also add Happy Valley. Both are fantastic.
The entire run of The Shield is on Hulu.
As is the first 3 seasons of Elementary. I highly recommend both.
Fortunately, the half-season that *was *made is perfectly self-contained, and ends on a satisfying (if ambiguous) note. Just think of it as a mini-series.
The two series of Life are streaming on Netflix. I saw a couple of episodes when it was out in 2007 and quite liked it but it just seemed to disappear. I watched from the beginning when I found it on Netflix. Unlike most older shows it is improved by binge watching. Much of the writing is excellent and it has a nice line of humor throughout.
And Donal Logue from* Terriers* is in it later on.
Thanks again all for the suggestions. We tried Daredevil last night and thought it was absolutely superb (we binge-watched 5 episodes) - a very stylish and noir-esque interpretation of what on paper sounds like a fairly silly concept. The cinematography in particular has moments of being really stunning.
I thought Justified was great, but again the other half was “meh” about it - perhaps it’s more ‘for the boys’.
Another vote for Shameless.
Outstanding writing and acting, incredible cast throughout.
mmm
Sleepy Hollow? I have no idea what’s going on, really, but it’s a hoot.
If you don’t object to older TV shows, I would like to recommend The Rockford Files to you.
Especially most of the episodes that include Angel Martin.
My very most favorite episode of them all is one titled “Quickie Nirvana”. It is from Season 4 - Episode 7.
Also, The Lou Grant Show had some very enjoyable episodes. I can heartily recommend it to you.
Oops, what he/she said.
Top of the Lake was a miniseries with Elizabeth Moss from Mad Men set in New Zealand - we really, really enjoyed it.
:smack: How did I forget that. My #1 favorite of them all. Absolutely, watch it. It even helped me answer a few Jeopardy questions I wouldn’t have otherwise known the answers to.
Have you watched Friday Night Lights? A gem which IMHO is often overlooked. I’ve recommended it to several people who invariably enjoy the hell out of it. It’s one of those few shows which, when it ended, left me teary at the thought of no more episodes.
The same writer/producer also had his hand in** Parenthood**.
Seconding Friday Night Lights and Justified.
Hannibal, a thing of horror and beauty, gave me bad dreams but loved it. Cancelled now, but three seasons of wonder…
