I want to record vids of me on my Logitech cam that I can send to a friend who has moved away. I’ve figured out how to do it, but quickly found that a 1:42 vid is over 10 meg, and that’s on the lowest resolution (160x120). Logitech’s ImageStudio only saves as .avi format.
I’ve got it set to “maximum frame rate”, but it will let me set a specific frame rate. I suspect if I change this, I can reduce the file size, but what should I reduce it to?
Any other thoughts on what I could do to make the files smaller and more managable? I want to be able to send them by e-mail. I suppose I could stream them, but I have no idea how to do that. My hosting package for my company website does not include streaming video.
If you can’t stream for whatever reason, consider a different codec. What codec are you currently using?
Using divx and a few minutes of experimentaiton I can get a 2 minute video clip (with audio) at 480 X 576 (SVCD res) down to 4 megs at 250 kbps (2 passes) in decent (I would say a bit less than tv) quality. The audio I encoded with Lame mp3 at 128 kbps.
So experiment wiht different codecs, see what achieves your idea of good size to quality ratio.
It has quickly become readily apparent that I haven’t a clue what’s going on. Right now, all I have is the software that comes with the camera (Logitech ImageStudio). I have divx player, but it won’t even play the video (though it will play in MediaPlayer).
Would you suggest that I get DivX if I’m going to want to play with the formatting?
A little update…I upgraded my DivX from 2.0 Alpha to the more recent 2.1 and it now plays back the video that I recorded. Of course, just being a player, it still won’t let me diddle with the compression, etc.
